San Diego High School Basketball : Mira Mesa’s Fourth-Quarter Spurt Pays Off, 65-55

Mira Mesa outscored Chula Vista, 22-10, in the fourth quarter to break open a tie game and take the Hilltop Tournament with a 65-55 victory Saturday over the Spartans at Hilltop.

David Lee scored 29 points and Mike Eicher added 16 for Mira Mesa (4-0). Both were named to the all-tournament team.

Chula Vista was led by Tony Hyner’s 15 points, while Richard Hankcock and James McCurty added 13 points apiece.

Tournaments

HILLTOP

La Jolla 63, Hilltop 50--La Jolla finished second in the round-robin tournament with the victory. Adam Kleid led La Jolla with 22 points while Sean Rogers added 12. Hilltop was paced by 14 points from Bryan Brooker.

Kearny 62, Sweetwater 57--Kearny outscored the Red Devils 23-11 in the third period to win the consolation. Chris Ortiz scored 16 points and John Williamson added 14 for Kearny. Marcus Carter scored 14 points for Sweetwater (0-5).

Point Loma 60, Hoover 46--Arlondo Hill scored 17 points to lead Point Loma (2-3). Tyrone Bell had 15 for Hoover with 15 points.

TORREY PINES

Clairemont 56, San Diego 46--Center Vic Baer scored 22 points and added 15 rebounds and four blocked shots for Clairemont. Forward Jason Deal and guard Ray McDavid scored 12 points apiece for Clairemont, which is 3-0 in the tournament. Tony Wines led San Diego (0-5) with 11 points.

Mar Vista 74, Carlsbad 69--Mar Vista won despite Carlsbad forward Shawn Stoll’s 32 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter. Tim Nicolis scored 19 and Todd Havel and Shake Sanchez each had 17 points for Mar Vista (3-3).

Nonleague

San Dieguito 45, Mission Bay 36--Chris Bahr scored 15 points and Paul Chan added 14 as San Dieguito improved to 4-1. Mission Bay dropped to 1-1.

Girls

Crawford 59, Fallbrook 55, ot--Crawford scored the first four points in overtime and held on to win the second-place game of the Point Loma/7-UP Classic. The score was tied 51-51 after regulation. Karla Salmi led Crawford with 23 points. Carmella Hicks scored 19 and Laura Hatcher added 13 for Crawford (4-1). Fallbrook (5-2) lost its second straight game.
