A little of the drama of Thursday afternoon’s match between the Mission Viejo High School girls’ soccer team, No. 1 in the 4-A division, and El Toro, the third-ranked team, was gone before the match began.

A good bit more vanished just one minute into the match at El Toro, when Mission Viejo’s Erin Dunteman took a free kick from the left sideline, scoring the eventual winning goal.

El Toro lost to Capistrano Valley Tuesday, somewhat diminishing the importance of the game against Mission Viejo.

And after Dunteman’s quick score, El Toro never threatened seriously, as Mission Viejo (2-0, 15-0-1) shut out the Chargers, 4-0, in a South Coast League match.

“That first goal going in so quick took something out of them (El Toro),” said Hiram DeFries, Mission Viejo coach.

A few minutes later, Tammy Vanopdorp scored off a centering pass from Julie Foudy, and about five minutes after that, Kerri Kennedy assisted Stacey Hopper, making it 3-0 before the first half was over.

Foudy scored the final goal on another Kennedy assist.

The second half was much more closely played, but not enough for El Toro (0-2, 5-3-2) to threaten.

Mission Viejo was ranked second in the preseason poll, and defeated preseason No. 1 Torrance in the finals of the Ocean View tournament. Only West Torrance has managed even a tie against the Diablos, and that was early in the season.

“I don’t see anybody beating them this season, not if they continue to play like they have been,” said Bob Chavez, El Toro coach.
