WINTER SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : BOYS BASKETBALL

Taft 81, Hamilton 52--Kevin Franklin scored 31 points, 25 in the second half, to lead Taft in the Valley League game. Franklin, who has scored at least 30 points in every league game this season, was sidelined for most of the first half with three fouls.

With Franklin on the bench, Taft (13-5, 5-4) struggled to a six-point halftime lead, then blew the game open in the third quarter upon his return. Vernon Middleton scored 16 points, Gerrard Prince scored 14 and Tony Moten had a team-high 21 rebounds for Taft. Paul Ragland scored 16 points for Hamilton (1-14, 1-8).

Birmingham 63, Chatsworth 42--Charles Johnson scored 17 points and Keith Owens added 14 points and nine rebounds as Birmingham won its 16th straight and seventh straight Northwest Valley League game. Ennera Maxwell scored 11 points and Adam Zuckerman had eight points for Birmingham (17-1, 7-0).

Stuart Johnson led Chatsworth (6-9, 2-5) with 16 points and eight rebounds.

El Camino Real 77, Reseda 66: Five players scored in double figures to lead El Camino Real to a Valley League win. Damon Orlando scored 21, Sean Davis had 17, and Brian Neal had 11 for El Camino (7-10, 3-6).

Jeff Ricks had 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead Reseda (5-10, 1-7).

Grant 49, Van Nuys 48--Chris Weber made a 15-foot jumper with 10 seconds remaining to give Grant the East Valley League victory. Van Nuys (6-10, 3-4) had a chance to regain the lead with two seconds left but Ron Lewis, who scored a team-high 12 points, missed two free throws. Mike Parker led Grant (9-8, 5-2) with 16 points.

North Hollywood 60, Poly 58--Peter and Dominic Nappi scored 15 points each for North Hollywood (9-5, 6-1) in the East Valley League game. Mike Ornelas led Poly with 16 points.

Channel Islands 65, Newbury Park 59--Omar Otis scored a game-high 19 points for Channel Islands (12-9, 5-4) in the Marmonte League game. Dan Ryan led Newbury Park (8-13, 3-7) with 17 points, and Rob Hanmer and Phil Royalty added 10 each.

Yeshiva 51, Oakwood 50--Oakwood’s 22-game Liberty League win streak and its 11-game streak this season were snapped in a game marred by 10 technical fouls and the ejection of the Yeshiva coach. Mitchell Butler scored a game-high 21 points for Oakwood (13-5, 9-1), and Eric Leddel added 10 points and 5 assists.

Canoga Park 74, Monroe 56--Andre Ball scored a game-high 19 points for Canoga Park (7-10, 3-4) in the Northwest Valley League game. Roosevelt Johnson scored 18 points and Tom Konkel added 17 points for Monroe (2-12, 0-7).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Kennedy 76, Cleveland 46--Tisa Rush scored 28 points and Diane DeCree had 22 points, 18 rebounds and 7 assists as Kennedy won its 87th consecutive Valley League game. Yolanda Lewis had 10 points and a game-high 9 assists for Kennedy (15-3, 7-0). Dawn Stewart led Cleveland (9-5, 5-2) with 16 points.

Canoga Park 55, Grant 43: Carmen Ellington had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead Canoga Park (3-3 in league) to the West Valley League win. Roz Linton added 13 points and 20 rebounds, and Caryl Lee had 10 points for Canoga Park.

San Fernando 59, Hollywood 34--Yadira Salmaron scored a game-high 21 points to lead San Fernando (5-6, 5-2) in the Pac-6 League game. Salmaron’s twin sister Mirna scored 11 points and Tonetta Cooper added 10. Hollywood is 3-8 and 3-4 in league.

Holy Martyrs 78, Yeshiva 31--Junior point guard Ayline Amirayan scored a school-record 36 points and added 5 assists and 7 steals as Holy Martyrs won the Liberty League game. Caroline Zouloumian scored 13 points for Holy Martyrs (13-2, 5-1).

Birmingham 41, Taft 26--Amy Rubenroit scored a game-high 12 points for Birmingham (11-6, 4-3) in the West Valley League game. Traci McAdams played her first game of the season for Birmingham and had eight points and 10 rebounds, all in the second half.

Sylmar 65, Verdugo Hills 34--Senior Keri Rincon had 31 points and 11 rebounds and sophomore Chris Parks had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Sylmar (6-5, 6-1) in the Pac-6 League game. Tsai Szutu had 11 points for Verdugo Hills.

El Camino Real 49, Van Nuys 32--Nicole Nelson and Melissa Guidi scored 14 points each for El Camino Real (9-6, 4-3) in the Valley League game. Cheryl Eddings led Van Nuys (4-12, 1-6) with 12 points.

Chatsworth 46, Granada Hills 38--Despite Erin Sommerville’s game-high 18 points, Granada Hills (2-10, 0-7) remained winless in Valley League play. Dianne Williams led a balanced Chatsworth attack with 12 points. Erica Miller, Nancy Steil and Valerie Arst had eight points apiece for Chatsworth (9-4, 4-3).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley College 68, College of the Desert 58--Valley trailed at halftime but rallied to win its eighth straight Southern California Conference game this season. Valley (20-3, 8-0) was led by Dametra Johnson with 26 points and Jeannie Washington with 12.

OTHER SCORES

Boys Basketball: West Valley Christian 69, Emmanuel 48; Holy Martyrs 61, Cal Prep 45; Oak Park 57, Carpinteria 52.
