HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Simi Valley Hammers 5 Homers in 19-6 Win

Sophomore pitcher Rick Langford allowed three hits over four innings in his first varsity start and picked up the win to lead Simi Valley to a 19-6 nonleague victory over Riverside Poly at Simi Valley on Wednesday.

Simi Valley (6-1) had six consecutive hits and scored six runs in the first inning. The Pioneers finished with 19 hits, including 12 for extra bases.

Scott Sharts scored four runs and drove in five with a double and two home runs to lead Simi Valley. The Pioneers had five home runs and have hit 12 homers in their past two games combined.

Greg Gerber was 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs, Tim Laker scored four runs and had two RBIs and Darren Aurand and Marcus Lockwood each scored three runs as Simi Valley opened a 13-1 lead by the third inning.

Ralph Gumph hit a solo home run for Riverside Poly (3-3) in the sixth inning. Simi Valley pitchers limited Riverside to five hits.

BASEBALL

Rio Mesa’s Ryan McMullen doubled in Alfonso Martinez in the third inning to give the Spartans (5-2) a 1-0 win over Camarillo in a nonleague game at Rio Mesa. Chris Henry (0-1) threw a two-hitter in a losing effort for Camarillo (0-4). Paul Perce (2-0) gave up two hits in five innings of relief to pick up the win for Rio Mesa. . . . Frank Tomlinson had five RBIs for Simi Lutheran (3-0) in a 20-9 win over the Buckley junior varsity in a nonleague game at Buckley.

Providence and the Lakewood junior varsity tied, 4-4, in a third-round game of the Serra tournament, but Lakewood advances to the semifinal round because it had 33 total bases to Providence’s 30. A tournament rule prohibits games from exceeding 2 hours, 20 minutes, hence, the tie. Providence pitcher Jeff Cirillo struck out 10 batters and was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Cirillo has 33 strikeouts in 20 innings and has yet to surrender an earned run.

Ventura (3-3) scored two runs with four consecutive hits in the bottom of the seventh as it came from behind to beat Westlake, 3-2, in a nonleague game at Ventura. . . . Tim Bohling had two hits and David Angulo drove in a run, but Newbury Park lost to Dos Pueblos, 8-1, in a nonleague game at Dos Pueblos. . . . Phil Romero and Tim Rohrbough combined for a two-hitter as St. Genevieve scored all of its runs in the first inning in a 9-4 nonleague win over Palmdale in a game that was called after five innings because of cold weather.

SOFTBALL

Trailing, 4-1, Louisville scored 18 runs in the fourth inning to beat Agoura, 21-4, in a nonleague game at Louisville. Louisville benefited from 12 walks to send 22 batters to the plate in the monster inning. Louisville’s Beth Bergenty started the rally with a two-run double that cut Agoura’s lead to 4-3. Two batters later, Chris Tyler singled in two runs to give Louisville the lead for good. Later in the inning, catcher Kristen Heather tripled with the bases loaded. Heather was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs, Chris Tyler was 2 for 2 with 4 RBIs and Katie Madden was 1 for 1 with 2 walks and 3 RBIs for Louisville (4-1). Agoura is 0-5.

VOLLEYBALL

Terry Schrumpf had 11 kills for Granada Hills in a 15-3, 15-9, 15-4 victory over Sylmar. It was Granada Hills’ fourth straight Mid-Valley League win and fifth consecutive victory overall. . . . John Ross had eight kills and Mike Collins and Steve Michalski added seven each as Chatsworth defeated Cleveland, 15-0, 15-4, 16-14, in a West Valley League match. Chatsworth (5-1), which has won seven consecutive league titles, was sparked by the passing of Jeff Horn. . . . Eric Treibatch had 13 kills and Mike Povanz added 12 to lead Montclair Prep (3-2, 1-1 in league) to a 15-3, 17-15, 3-15, 15-8 victory over Bel-Air Prep in a Liberty League game.

Ricky Lewis had eight kills as Chaminade (5-2, 3-1 in league) defeated Bell-Jeff, 15-7, 15-9, 15-12, in a Santa Fe League game at Bell-Jeff. . . . Middle blocker J.R. Sandin had 23 kills and setter Tom Fenno had 39 assists as Taft (5-0) defeated Kennedy, 16-14, 15-13, 13-15, 15-10, in a West Valley League game at Taft. . . . Ken Lynch had 19 kills and 11 blocks and Chris Faucher had 18 kills as Crespi (3-2) defeated Hawthorne, 15-5, 11-15, 15-17, 15-1, 15-11, in a nonleague game at Hawthorne.

GOLF

Grant and Eagle Rock battled to a 222-222 tie in a Valley League match at the Woodley Golf Course. Grant’s Lance Ortiz earned medalist honors with a 2-over-par 38.
