Orange County Community College Roundup : OCC Volleyball Team Wins Regional

Orange Coast College lost the first two games and trailed, 14-11, in the third game before coming back to win the Southern California Regional volleyball championship by defeating Long Beach City College, 9-15, 12-15, 16-14, 15-10, 15-0, Friday at Long Beach.

OCC saved five match points in the third game before coming back for the victory. The Pirates (33-2) defeated South Coast Conference rival Long Beach City for the third time this season.

Brian Lewis, an OCC outside hitter who had 37 kills in the match, was named junior college player of the year.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Saddleback 4, Rancho Santiago 0--Patti Taylor pitched a three-hitter at Saddleback. Taylor (24-4) struck out 11 and walked one.

The victory moves Saddleback (15-3, 31-8) into a tie for first place in the conference with Rancho Santiago (15-3, 28-8).

Cypress 1, Riverside 0--Jennifer Garcia went 2 for 4 and singled in the winning run in the eighth inning to lead the Chargers (9-9, 19-19) at Riverside. Noel Parker (16-15) gave up four hits and struck out seven in a complete game. Parker, a freshman, has gone 34 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run. Riverside is 6-12 in conference.

In South Coast Conference softball:

Fullerton 6, Golden West 0--Traci Smith pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine and walking three at Fullerton. Sandra Williams was 3 for 4, and Liz Cervantes was 2 for 4 for Fullerton (10-2, 31-8). Golden West is 7-5, 23-15.

In women’s swimming:

Community college state championships: Freshmen Tina Constable and Casie Grant led Orange Coast College into first place in the second day of the women’s swim championships at Merced.

Constable placed second in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 26.44, a school record. Susana Brown of West Valley won the event in 26.36. Both women broke the state record of 26.50 set by Denise Odenwald of Orange Coast College in 1981.

Grant placed fifth in the 50-yard breaststroke in 32.97.

The Pirates lead the meet with 275 points. Following Orange Coast is Diablo Valley (205), West Valley (187), Saddleback (121) and Golden West (118).

In men’s swimming:

Community college state championships: Rob Laurie, Karl Stewart and Chris Duncan of Orange Coast College led the Pirates to second place in the second day of the community college men’s swim championships at Merced.

In men’s tennis:

Orange Empire Conference tournament: Three Orange Coast College singles players advanced to the tournament semifinals, and the OCC doubles team of Chris Ganz and John Gabriel advanced to the doubles final at Rancho Santiago College.
