San Diego High School Baseball : Marian Surprises Eighth-Rated Coronado, 4-2

Branden Hayes went 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs to lead Marian to a 4-2 upset of No. 8 Coronado in a Metro Conference baseball game Friday.

Sam Gueverra went the distance, allowing seven hits to lead Marian (3-3, 5-10). Steve Lucal had two hits and an RBI for Coronado (6-1, 13-5).

“We just didn’t have a lot of enthusiasm today,” said Coronado Coach Ron Smock. “We just went through the motions.”

METRO CONFERENCE

Bonita Vista 4, Sweetwater 2--Teddy Ehrhardt had two of Bonita Vista’s four hits to lead the Barons to the win at home. Randy Abshier pitched five innings for the win and also drove in a run for Bonita Vista (2-5, 6-13). Sweetwater dropped to 1-5, 4-12.

Castle Park 16, Southwest 5--Jose Palos went 3 for 3 with three RBIs to help lead Castle Park (3-3, 14-6) to its third straight league win. Steve Alvarez went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and scored three times. Sophomore pitcher Juan Beltran (4-0) went three innings for the victory. Southwest dropped to 2-6, 6-10.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Fallbrook 9, Vista 3--Bill Dunckel and Mark Ringkamp each drove in three runs as visiting Fallbrook (4-3, 14-6) pounded Vista (3-4, 6-10). Fallbrook’s Ty Barksdale also went 2 for 4. Vista’s Tony Orozco went 2 for 4 with an RBI, and teammate Mike Babcock drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double.

Orange Glen 8, Torrey Pines 5--Frank Escalante had two home runs and five RBIs to lead host Orange Glen (6-1, 16-5) over Torrey Pines (3-4, 8-9). Escalante hit a two-run homer in the first as Orange Glen took a 4-1 lead. Orange Glen trailed, 5-4, going into the bottom of the sixth, when Escalante hit a three-run shot to put the Patriots ahead for good. Ray Chatton also homered for Orange Glen.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

San Marcos 14, El Camino 4--Bill Mc Elroy doubled, tripled and homered to drive in four runs and pace visiting San Marcos (5-2, 9-9) over El Camino (0-7, 2-13). Tom Morton also went 3 for 5 with an RBI for San Marcos. Paul Jeffers (1-1) was the winning pitcher.

San Pasqual 8, Escondido 2--Clint Cruz (5-2) pitched seven innings, striking out five, to lead San Pasqual to its sixth straight win and seventh of its last eight. Darren Dunn went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead San Pasqual (4-3, 11-8). Escondido dropped to 5-2, 7-10.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

El Capitan 5, El Cajon Valley 4--Carlos Gutierrez’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh broke a five-game losing streak for No. 10 El Capitan.

Jerry Aldridge hit a one-out double and Gutierrez’s single drove him in for the winning run. Rob Arnold (5-2) went the distance for the win to lead El Capitan (6-3, 11-1). El Cajon Valley (2-7, 5-12) led 4-0 after two innings.

Santana 3, Mount Miguel 1--Billy Reed went 2 for 3 and got the save to lead Santana (6-3, 12-6) at home. Tim Barry pitched five innings for the win, and Bruce Moutaw had two RBIs. Mount Miguel dropped to 3-6, 8-6.

Briefly--Grossmont 20, Monte Vista 4; Valhalla 2, Helix 0.

NON-LEAGUE

San Dieguito 11, Oceanside 3--Matt Moniak drove in four runs with two singles and a home run to lead host San Dieguito (7-8). Dwayne Wilson had three singles and three stolen bases for Oceanside (4-13).
