HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Westlake Slips Into First in Marmonte League, 7-6

Westlake High scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday to slip past Royal, 7-6, and move into first place in the Marmonte League.

Jim Henderson’s single drove in Mike Campbell to tie the game, 6-6, and Greg Struhl doubled to right to score Britt Johnson, running for Henderson, with the game-winner.

Royal (5-5 in league) had a two-run lead in the second, but Westlake (12-9-1, 7-2-1 in league) came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, 2-2, on John Rowedder’s two-run single.

A 4-2 Royal lead in the fifth inning evaporated on Struhl’s two-run double, and the Highlanders also could not hold a 6-4 advantage in the sixth.

The victory gave Westlake a percentage-points lead in the Marmonte over Simi Valley, which lost to Channel Islands, 12-7, and assures the Warriors of a playoff berth for the first time in the school’s nine-year baseball history.

John Chiaramonte (5-1), who picked up the win with two innings of relief, has not given up an earned run in his last 13 innings.

BASEBALL

Channel Islands touched Scott Sharts for six runs on five hits in one inning plus and went on to a 12-7 Marmonte League victory over Simi Valley. Sharts (8-3) went 3 for 4 with a homer and 2 RBIs, but Simi Valley (18-5, 8-3 in league) lost its third straight game and fell out of first place. Channel Islands improved to 16-8 and 6-4 in league.

Mark Skeels’ grand slam, his first home run this season, highlighted a seven-run fifth inning and lifted Thousand Oaks to a 7-2 Marmonte League win over Newbury Park (2-7-1 in league). Tom Brozowski, Joey Sturges and Kris Kaelin all went 2 for 3 and knocked in a run in the fifth for Thousand Oaks (6-14, 4-7 in league).

SOFTBALL

Jodi Iwafuchi (9-0) pitched and batted El Camino Real to a 12-1 West Valley League win at Reseda. Iwafuchi pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out seven, and also went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Stacy Trapp had three hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs for El Camino (13-0, 8-0 in league). . . . Tanya Pulfer singled home Pamela Washington with the winning run in the eighth inning to give Canoga Park (4-4 in league) a 7-6 West Valley League victory over Taft. Washington, who was 3 for 5 with 4 runs scored and 2 RBIs, scored the tying run in the sixth on a fielder’s choice.

Maria Orosco and Soyla Hernandez hit back-to-back doubles to key a five-run first inning as San Fernando (6-7, 3-5 in league) defeated Kennedy, 8-3, in a North Valley League game.

Cheri Warren’s two-run home run in the third inning keyed a 12-hit attack as Sylmar (7-1 in league) blasted Monroe, 15-0, in an East Valley League game. Sylmar’s Teri Klement and Chris Parks each had three hits, and Parks struck out 10.

Janeen Duncan (15-5) threw a 2-hitter, striking out 12, and collected 4 hits to post her 10th straight victory and lead Alemany (15-6, 8-0 in league) to a 10-1 San Fernando Valley League win at St. Genevieve. Tiffani Riley (3 for 5, 3 RBIs), Suzanne Schwary (3 for 5, 2 RBIs), Ilene Tebbs (3 for 5, 2 RBIs) and Jill Greenwood (3 for 4) also contributed to the win. . . . Becca Berline (14-5) tossed a three-hitter, striking out five, to lead Notre Dame (15-5, 7-1 in league) to a 12-1 San Fernando Valley League win over Louisville (3-5 in league).

VOLLEYBALL

Chatsworth defeated San Pedro, 15-4, 15-6, 15-8, in the quarterfinals of the City Section 4-A Division playoffs at Chatsworth. The Chancellors, seeded second behind University, were led by Mark Root and Steve Michalski with six kills each. . . . J.R. Sandin had 20 kills, but Taft dropped a 12-15, 15-10, 15-7, 15-11 decision to Palisades in a City 4-A quarterfinal playoff match at Palisades. Tom Fenno had 52 assists for Taft (13-2). . . . Ryan Davis had 10 kills, but Kennedy (8-7) dropped a 15-12, 15-6, 15-9 City 4-A quarterfinal match at University.

Granada Hills defeated Lincoln, 13-15, 15-1, 15-6, 15-1, in a quarterfinal match of the City 3-A playoffs. Granada Hills, the defending 3-A champion, was led by Terry Schrumpf with 10 kills and Erik Dumas with nine. . . . Tibor Kalman had eight kills and four blocks to lead Reseda past Marshall 1-15, 15-3, 15-8, 15-13 in a City 3-A quarterfinal match. Mike Marzahl added seven kills and four blocks and Coley Kyman had seven kills and three blocks for Reseda (14-1).

Mike Lowe had 12 kills to lead Harvard (14-0 in league) to a Santa Fe League title-clinching 15-1, 15-7, 15-4 victory over Bell-Jeff. . . . Sal Casola had eight kills and Bill Cheeseman had six blocks to lead Chaminade to a 15-5, 15-12, 15-5 Santa Fe League victory at St. Genevieve.

Eric Treibatch had 23 kills to lead Montclair Prep (10-9, 4-6 in league) to a 12-15, 15-10, 6-15, 15-4, 15-8 Liberty League win over Flintridge Prep (3-7 in league).
