HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Harvard Reaches 1-A Playoffs, 4-3

Harvard Coach Jim Brink, faced with a shortage of pitchers, needed a strong performance from sophomore right-hander David Lee in Saturday’s Santa Fe League playoff game against St. Genevieve.

Lee went the distance to lead Harvard to a 4-3 victory and a third-place finish in the league, sending the Saracens into the Southern Section playoffs, which begin Friday.

St. Genevieve (11-10) had forced the playoff Friday by beating Harvard, 6-2. Two of Harvard’s five pitchers played in a national rugby tournament in Denver on Saturday and couldn’t attend the playoff.

That left Brink with three regular pitchers. Lee got the nod. Lee (5-1) allowed eight hits but had no strikeouts, walked only one and gave up just one earned run.

SWIMMING

Eric Weitz won two individual events and was a member of a winning relay as Calabasas coasted to the Southern Section 2-A boys championship at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.

Calabasas accumulated 127 points to win its first-ever title. Brea-Olinda finished second with 89 points and Miraleste was third with 82.

Weitz, a senior, defended his 2-A titles in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.49) and the 100 backstroke (53.79). Weitz also teamed with Mike Litter, Richard McCarty and Scott Humphrey to win the 200 medley relay (1:40.90) in school-record time.

Lynn Gospardek of Hart finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.24) in the girls 3-A Division. Gospardek had the fastest qualifying time Thursday but Saturday finished behind Erica Freeman of Ridgecrest Burroughs (1:07.87) and Grace Moon (1:08.53) of Hacienda Heights Wilson.

In other 3-A races, Crespi’s Chappie DeHaven placed third in the boys 200 freestyle (1:44.46), and Burbank’s Denise Lamoureaux finished fourth in the girls 200 freestyle (1:57.53)
