Southern Section Softball Playoffs : Ocean View’s Schneller Blanks Millikan on 3 Hits, 3-0

Ocean View pitcher Cindy Schneller threw a three-hitter and did not allow a batter past first in shutting out Millikan, 3-0, in a Southern Section 4-A first-round softball game at Millikan Thursday.

Ocean View scored three runs on two hits in the sixth off Tracy Smith (11-4), who came into the game with six consecutive one-hitters.

Jennifer McClintock’s single drove in two runs, and Korie Bacon drove in the third with an infield single for Ocean View (14-11). Schneller raised her record to 12-10.

The Seahawks, who won an at-large berth into the tournament as the Sunset League’s fourth entry, will play Gahr in a second-round game Tuesday in a site to be determined today.

Millikan, the Moore League champion, finishes its season at 16-11.

In other 4-A softball games:

Kennedy 3, Mater Dei 0--Chris Calmmer (6-6) pitched a three-hitter and struck out four to lead the Fighting Irish at Kennedy. Laurie Grapper had two triples and an RBI to help Kennedy (16-11-1). Danyna Fite (8-6) allowed nine hits for the Monarchs (14-12). Kennedy will play Marina (17-6) in a second-round game Tuesday at a site to be determined.

Los Alamitos 1, Edison 0--Nancy Clark (12-4) pitched a two-hitter and went 2 for 3 with a double to lead Los Alamitos at home. The Griffins scored the game-winning run on the third of three straight Edison errors in the fifth inning. Terri Carpenter (17-6) struck out seven for Edison (18-8), which committed five errors. Los Alamitos (17-7) will play Buena in a second-round game Tuesday.

Cypress 2, Burbank 1--Nicky Luce (17-5) pitched a two-hitter and struck out three to lead the Centurions at Cambridge Park in Burbank. Heidi Heim went 2 for 3 and drove in Joanne Brobeur with the winning run in the sixth inning, and Karen Kuypers had a two-out single to left to drive in the first run for Cypress (18-8). Dena Day gave up five hits and struck out two for Burbank (17-4). Cypress will play Downey in a second-round game Tuesday at Cypress.

Marina 1, Cerritos 0--Christy Larsen (11-4) pitched a three-hitter, struck out six and hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to lead the Vikings at Marina. Marina (17-6), the Sunset League champion, will play Kennedy (16-11-1) in Tuesday’s second round.

St. Paul 1, Fountain Valley 0--The Barons, the Sunset League’s second-place team, finish the season at 17-10.
