HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL : SMALL SCHOOLS PLAYOFFS

Providence 9, San Jacinto 1--Jeff Cirillo threw a three-hitter and struck out 12 to lead Providence to a Large Division victory at Burroughs High. Providence scored all the runs it needed with a four-run second inning. Mark Miyamoto had an RBI double and Steve Ross, Vic Salazar and Paul Garcia each had RBI singles in the inning.

In the second round, Providence plays Tehachapi, which defeated Western Christian, 11-1.

Crossroads 5, L.A. Baptist 3--Crossroads left-hander Mike LeBuffe (8-2) didn’t allow a baserunner after the third inning in the Large Schools game. L.A. Baptist (10-10-1) raced to a 3-0 lead, but starter Eric Broberg (3-2) failed to hold on.

Flintridge Prep 8, Highland Hall 0--Steve Swayne pitched a two-hitter and had four strikeouts as Flintridge Prep beat Highland Hall (14-6) in the first round of the Small Division playoffs. After allowing a leadoff walk, Swayne retired the next 14 batters and had a no-hitter through 5 innings before giving up a single to Takeshi Suesada.

Flintridge Prep (11-11) will play Templeton in the second round.

Avalon 9, Oakwood 3--Avalon scored six unearned runs off Oakwood starter Marc Williams (9-2) in a Small Division game at Bluebird Field in Pacioma. Avalon scored three in the first and two in the second. Oakwood (12-2-1) committed six errors in the game.
