Royals Acquire Garber; Storm Davis Goes to A’s

The movement in major league baseball continued Sunday, with three pitchers changing teams.

The Atlanta Braves traded veteran relief pitcher Gene Garber to the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named; the San Diego Padres sent Storm Davis to the Oakland Athletics for two players to be named,and the St. Louis Cardinals traded left-handed reliever Pat Perry to the Cincinnati Reds for a player to be named.

These trades came one day after the Dodgers sent Rick Honeycutt to the A’s, and the Angels acquired second baseman Johnny Ray from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Garber, a right-hander, was with the Royals in 1973 and ’74 after being traded by Pittsburgh for pitcher Jim Rooker.

Garber had an 8-10 record and 10 saves this season with Atlanta. He appeared in 48 games and worked 69 innings with a 4.41 earned-run average.

Garber, 39, started his major league career with Pittsburgh in 1969. After his two seasons with the Royals, he was sold to the Philadelphia Phillies.

On June 15, 1978, Garber was traded by the Phillies to Atlanta for pitcher Dick Ruthven.

In 1982, he had a career-high 30 saves. Last year, he had 24 saves.

Davis, who was acquired by the Padres last October from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for catcher Terry Kennedy and pitcher Mark Williamson, appeared in 21 games for San Diego and had a 2-7 record and 6.81 ERA.

His best season for Baltimore was 1984, when he was 14-9 with a 3.12 ERA.

Perry was 4-2 with a 4.39 ERA and 1 save in 45 games for the Cardinals. He will join the Reds tonight for a three-game series at St. Louis.

Perry was 2-3 for St. Louis in 1986 with a 3.80 ERA.
