Freeway League : Razo Returns, Leads La Habra to 35-0 Victory

La Habra High School quarterback Al Razo, who sat out last week’s victory over Fullerton because of ineligibility, returned in style Friday night as La Habra coasted to a 35-0 Freeway League victory over Buena Park High School at La Habra Stadium.

Razo was required to sit out a year after he transferred from Servite, and La Habra had to forfeit four victories in which he played this season.

On Friday, Razo came in at quarterback on La Habra’s third series with the Highlanders already leading, 13-0. He threw only two passes, but those were for touchdowns. Razo also led La Habra with 63 yards rushing in 8 carries.

La Habra (2-7, 2-2) wasn’t exactly in trouble when senior Matt Shackelford started in place of Razo at quarterback. Shackelford rushed for two touchdowns and alternated with Razo at quarterback throughout the game.

“We’re very fortunate to have two good quarterbacks,” La Habra Coach Bob Rau said. “They’re two of our best athletes, and we use both of them.”

With the Highlanders running an option offense, Shackelford and Razo frequently switched between quarterback and running back.

La Habra’s defense started scoring when defensive back Kevin Capps intercepted Buena Park quarterback Matt Acevedo’s first pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.

On La Habra’s next series, Shackelford ran 13 yards on the option to put the Highlanders ahead, 13-0.

Razo then threw a 36-yard pass to Eric Zimmerman to make it 20-0, and a 24-yard pass to Tim Moore to give La Habra a 28-0 halftime lead.

Shackelford ended the scoring early in the second half after recovering a fumble and running 34 yards for the score.

Buena Park (3-6, 0-4) never seriously threatened to score, as Acevedo completed only 2 of 15 passes for 18 yards.

For La Habra, a victory next week over Sunny Hills will guarantee the team at least a share of third place in the Freeway League and a playoff berth.
