Southern Section Water Polo : Jordon Leads University Over Marina

David Jordon scored a pair of fourth-quarter goals, including one with 45 seconds left, to give University High School an 8-7 victory over Marina Friday in a first-round 4-A Southern Section water polo match at Marina.

The teams were tied, 6-6, at the start of the fourth quarter. Jordon, who had three goals in the game, scored with 4:16 left to give University a 7-6 lead.

Eric Monroe, who had four goals, scored with four minutes left for Marina (13-12). Marina goalie Rob Foland had 17 saves.

University (17-9) advances to a quarterfinal Tuesday against Sunny Hills, the top-seeded team and the 5-A defending champion.

In other 4-A matches:

Sunny Hills 15, Canyon 9--Sunny Hills (25-2) moved into the quarterfinal round with the victory at home. Canyon ends the season 17-11.

Corona del Mar 15, Millikan 6--Corona del Mar, the fourth-seeded team in the 4-A, won at home to advance to a quarterfinal Tuesday against Foothill, which defeated Fountain Valley, 9-5, in the first round. Corona del Mar is 24-4 and Millikan finishes 14-11.

Tustin 16, Edison 8--John Wilson scored six goals to lead Tustin (18-10) at home. Kevin Leinbach had four goals and Jay Warren three for Tustin. Edison ends the season 16-9. Tustin plays Long Beach Wilson, which defeated Fullerton, 13-10, in a quarterfinal Tuesday.

Newport Harbor 12, Long Beach Poly 4--Newport Harbor (23-4), the second-seeded team in the 5-A, won at home and will play Villa Park in a quarterfinal match Tuesday.

Villa Park defeated Buena Park, 7-5, Friday.

In 3-A matches:

Costa Mesa 17, Kennedy 10--Costa Mesa, the defending 2-A champion, won at Cypress College to advance to the quarterfinals against El Rancho Tuesday. Costa Mesa is 21-6 and Kennedy ends 19-5.

La Serna 17, Brea-Olinda 5--Corbin Walburger had six goals for La Serna (23-5), which won its second-round match at Valencia High School. Brea-Olinda ends 19-7.
