Cal State Dominguez Hills will unveil its men’s basketball team tonight in a 7:30 exhibition game against a touring Australian team. Coach Dave Yanai, coming off a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship and NCAA playoff appearance, will have four new starters to go with returning center Anthony Blackmon. The young team has only two seniors and one, Roger Coleman, didn’t play last season. Among the lettermen who will see considerable action are senior guard Barry Johnson, juni1869750375forward Mike Rudberg.

The Loyola Marymount University men’s and women’s basketball teams will preview their seasons with their annual Crimson-Gray intra-squad games today in Gersten Pavilion. The women’s team will scrimmage at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30. The Loyola men are led by West Coast Athletic Conference scoring champion Mike Yoest and leading rebounder Mark Armstrong, plus transfers Hank Gathers at forward and Corey Gaines at guard. Another noted transfer, guard Bo Kimble, is recovering from a knee injury. The Loyola women return five players including senior Amy Atkinson, the leading rebounder, and Michelle Bettencourt, the leading scorer.

At least one South Bay high school is assured of playing for the CIF 4-A girls tennis championship, since Rolling Hills plays top-seed Miraleste at 2 p.m. today in a semifinal at Miraleste. In another girls playoff semifinal tonight, Mira Costa will play host to Corona del Mar in a 5-A volleyball match at Redondo High at 7:30. Mira Costa, seeded third, is two-time defending CIF champion and has won four of the last five titles.

UCLA received top seeding in the Far West region and will open NCAA men’s soccer playoffs 2 p.m. Sunday at Fresno State. The Bruins beat Fresno, 2-1, in overtime, last month. UCLA enters the playoffs at 13-6-1. Sophomore forward Bill Thompson is the top scorer with 7 goals and 20 points, followed by senior Jeff Hooker with 7 goals and 19 points. Fresno, 16-5, is the West’s hottest team, carrying a seven-game winning streak. Bill Wiskel, Fresno State’s leading scorer with 12 goals and 35 points, will not play because he was ejected in Fresno’s last game.

They’ll be warring in the hills today as the Miraleste High School girls tennis team (17-0) battles its rival from over the hill, Rolling Hills (17-5), in one CIF-Southern Section 4-A semifinal playoff.

Corona Del Mar (19-2-1) will meet Westlake (15-3-1) in the other semifinal.

The showdown in Rancho Palos Verdes will give Rolling Hills a chance to avenge a 15-3 regular-season loss to Miraleste, which has collected two Southern Section championships and finished second once since 1984.

Rollings Hills Coach Tom Cox, whose team edged Edison, 11-7, Thursday, is sure his Titans are underdogs: “There’s no question that if we beat them it’s a major upset.”

The chance of an upset rocketed, according to Miraleste Coach Jim Hanson, when the Marauders’ second and third doubles teams played with little emotion in Miraleste’s 12-6 quarterfinal victory over Capistrano Valley.
