Indio 10, Chaminade 8--Chaminade, the defending Southern Section 2-A girls champion, won only one of the final six sets in a semifinal upset at the Northridge Tennis Club.
The Eagles (15-3) had beaten Indio three times in a row, including a win in last year’s 2-A final, and was the top-seeded team in the 32-school tournament.
Tiffany Brinley and Kristi Engle, Indio’s No. 2 doubles team, won the final two points of a 12-point tiebreaker to decide the match. Brinley and Engle upset Chaminade’s No. 1 team of Kelly Croy and Sandy Hua, 7-6 (10-8), in the final match.
Fourth-seeded Indio (16-6) won six of the nine doubles matches.
“Singles help you win league, doubles decide titles,” Chaminade Coach Susan Earl-Lynn said.
