Pacific Coast League : Trabuco Hills Rallies to Top Laguna Hills, 26-17

Trabuco Hills High School earned a Southern Section playoff berth in the Desert-Mountain Conference by defeating Laguna Hills, 26-17, in a Pacific Coast League game Friday night before 1,500 at Mission Viejo High School.

Trabuco Hills (8-2, 3-2) overcame an 11-0 Laguna Hills lead. The Mustangs’ defense held Laguna Hills quarterback Chris Leigber to 15 of 25 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown. Brian Fleming, the county’s leading pass receiver, caught 4 passes for 56 yards for the Hawks.

Laguna Hills (2-7-1, 2-3) scored its first points on a 22-yard field goal by Fleming with 8:44 remaining in the first quarter. Mark Mason made it 9-0 when he intercepted a John Barnes pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. Fleming ran for a two-point conversion to make the score, 11-0.

Trabuco Hills came back with an 11-yard touchdown run by Todd Marsh to make it, 11-6. A pass for a two-point conversion failed.

The Mustangs scored three times in the second quarter--on Greg Sparks’ 13-yard run, a safety and Rawn Johnson’s 24-yard touchdown run after a fumble recovery. Both extra-point attempts failed, leaving Trabuco Hills with a 20-11 halftime lead.

Marsh scored the Mustangs’ final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run.

The Hawks scored their final touchdown on a 25-yard pass from Leigber to tight end Rob Milo. A two-point conversion try failed.

Orange 35, Costa Mesa 6--Running back Paul Maund rushed for 110 yards in 13 carries and scored 3 touchdowns to lead Orange at Newport Harbor.

Maund scored on touchdowns of three, one and two yards. Steve Ward helped the Panthers (3-7, 1-4) with a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Terry Bryant led Costa Mesa (1-9, 0-5) with 61 yards rushing and an 18-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Rich Schones in the third quarter.
