PREP SPORTS : Newport Beach Schools Meet for Girls’ 5-A Volleyball Title

Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar, Newport Beach high schools that have been among the best girls’ volleyball teams in the state all season, will meet for the Southern Section 5-A title tonight at Marina High in Huntington Beach. Newport Harbor has a 19-0 record, Corona del Mar 17-2.

The match, scheduled for 8:45, is the last of five finals today at Marina. The rest of the lineup:

--Flintridge Sacred Heart of La Canada, 12-2, against L.A. Sacred Heart, 16-4, in the Small Schools at 9:30 a.m.

--Ontario Christian, 16-2, against Maranatha of Sierra Madre, 17-0, in the 1-A at 11:30.

--Thousand Oaks, 19-1, against Newbury Park, 16-4, in the 2-A at 1:30.

--San Gabriel, 19-1, against Agoura, 16-2, in the 3-A at 3:30.

--After a break to clear the gym for the night session, Long Beach Wilson, 17-1, will meet Irvine, 16-2, for the 4-A title at 6:15.

Prime Ticket will show the 5-A match Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The Southern Section cross-country finals will be held today at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, with the first race, the boys’ 4-A, set to begin at 8:20 a.m. Races will then go off at 20- to 25-minute intervals, with the girls’ 1-A at 10:35 scheduled as the last to begin.

Palos Verdes is trying to become the first school to win team titles in the boys’ and girls’ divisions in the same year since Bishop in 1976.

The Sea Kings have the top-ranked girls’ team in the state and are a clear favorite to win the Southern Section 4-A title. The boys are No. 2 in the state, behind Arroyo of El Monte, a 3-A school, and will likely have to beat Corona del Mar and Dana Hills for the championship today.
