San Diego Community College Roundup : Sturch Looking to Extend Records in Season Finale

Share

Jeff Sturch, the San Diego Mesa College quarterback, will attempt to add to the Mission Conference records he already holds when Mesa plays host to San Diego City in its regular-season finale Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Sturch, a sophomore from Claremont High School, has set conference career records in yardage (4,837), touchdown passes (40), completions (381) and attempts (702). This season, he is 195 for 372 for 2,475 yards with 19 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He needs 71 yards to set the conference’s single-season passing yardage record.

The hopes of a Saddleback-Orange Coast rematch in the PONY Bowl doubleheader, set for Dec. 5 at Costa Mesa, appear remote at this point. OCC turned down two invitations this week to be part of the new two-game format. The Pirates already defeated Saddleback, 42-38, Oct. 3 in a Mission Conference game. But OCC later lost to Riverside, so Saddleback and OCC are tied for first in conference.

El Camino (9-0) is expected to play Taft (9-0) for the national championship in the 7 p.m. game. El Camino, the South Coast Conference champion, is the top-ranked team in Southern California and second in the state. Taft, the Central Valley Conference champion, is the top-ranked team in the state coaches’ poll and in the nation in the J.C. Grid-Wire poll.

The other game is scheduled for 1 p.m. The PONY Bowl committee isn’t expected to make a decision on the fourth team until Sunday.
