Pacifica High School combined a potent ground attack with a stingy defense to defeat La Mirada, 28-0, Friday night at Garden Grove High and advance to the second round of the Central Conference playoffs.

The Mariners will face Newport Harbor at a site to be determined in a second-round game next Friday night.

Senior running back Oscar Ravelo rushed for 130 yards in 16 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 43 and 26 yards as the Mariners (8-3-1) gained 280 yards rushing against the Matadors (6-5).

Sophomore running back Chris Shockley gained 129 yards and scored Pacifica’s first touchdown, a 21-yard run in the first quarter.

The Mariner defense held La Mirada to minus 19 yards rushing. Led by linebacker Jeff Torrey, Pacifica’s defense sacked Matador quarterback Eric Brooks seven times.

Brooks, who completed 9 of 21 pass attempts for 139 yards, led the Matadors to the Pacifica two-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but La Mirada turned the ball over on downs to end its only scoring threat.

Quarterback Shelby Hart scored the Mariners’ other touchdown on a 1-yard run with less than a minute to play in the first half following a Matador fumble.
