Boys’ Basketball : Stephens Maintains Scoring Pace for San Fernando

It was a productive week for San Fernando High guard Tory Stephens.

The 6-2 senior racked up his second consecutive 37-point performance as San Fernando (9-4, 3-0) remained the only unbeaten team in the Northwest Valley League with an 88-64 clubbing of Canoga Park on Friday at Canoga Park.

Stephens, who scored 37 points and had 10 rebounds against Monroe on Wednesday, added 10 rebounds and 7 assists against Canoga Park. He made 3 of 4 three-point shots and narrowly missed being credited with three-point goals on two other attempts because he crossed the three-point line.

Stephens’ backcourt partner, Joe Mauldin, contributed 23 points and 5 steals. The Tigers had 20 steals. Jeremy Mears led Canoga Park (2-11, 1-2) with 13 points.

North Hollywood 55, Sylmar 49--Despite a near collapse in the fourth quarter on their home court, the Huskies remained in a first-place tie with Grant in the East Valley League.

North Hollywood (10-3, 3-0) led, 50-35, after three quarters but scored only five points and failed to make a field goal in the final period. North Hollywood’s Dominic Nappi led all players with 20 points. Nappi made 10 of 12 free throws.

Guard Shawn Rucker led Sylmar (5-4, 1-2) with 16 points and David Baker added 10. North Hollywood made 16 of 28 field-goal attempts in the first half, including 6 of the first 7. But in the second half, the Huskies made only 4 of 15.

Van Nuys 48, Verdugo Hills 46--Alonzo Galloway scored five points in the final minute to give the visiting Wolves an East Valley League victory.

Verdugo Hills led, 45-39, with a minute left before Galloway and Jimmy Chriss made back-to-back three-point shots to tie the score. Galloway then made two free throws and Chriss added another to give Van Nuys the win.

Galloway finished with 16 points and 6 assists. Dave Pernell came off the bench to score 10 points for the Wolves (5-5, 2-1) and Chriss added 9 points.

Burbank 94, San Gabriel 45--Five Burbank (10-6, 2-1) players scored in double figures in the Foothill League game at home.

Burbank’s Russell Warner led all scorers with 15 points off the bench and teammates Mark Nielsen and Mike Nash added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Granada Hills 74, Birmingham 73--John Johnson hit two free throws with 13 seconds left to give the Highlanders the victory in the Northwest Valley League game.

Kyle Jan’s 20 points led Granada Hills (6-4, 2-1) and Alvin Brown added 17 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds.

Harvard 76, Bell-Jeff 58--Charles Patton scored a game-high 18 points to lead Harvard to an upset in a Santa Fe League game at home.

Patton was one of four Saracens to score in double figures. Geoff Given (13 points), Scott Wood (11) and Rick Osterloh (10) were the others.

Henry Polee led Bell-Jeff (7-6, 3-2) with 14 points and Greg Dunn added 12.

Hart 84, Burroughs 78--Four players scored in double figures for the second consecutive game as Hart (9-6, 2-1 in league play) won a Foothill League game on its home court. Brian Allen led the Indians with 26 points, Jim Harper added 16 points, Brett Wilson had 12 and Steve Valenzuela had 11.

Eddie Hill scored a game-high 33 points for Burroughs (6-10, 0-3), including 10 of 10 free throws. Dan Murphy added 24 points and was 18 of 21 from the free-throw line.

L.A. Baptist 51, Western Christian 40--James Hoback had 14 points and 13 rebounds as L. A. Baptist rolled to its third consecutive Alpha League win.

Teammate Mike Wise added 12 points and 8 assists for L. A. Baptist (11-3, 3-0 in league), which won its fourth consecutive game.

Saugus 66, Palmdale 61--Saugus blew a 13-point halftime lead but hung on to improve its Golden League record to 2-1 with its second win this week. Rick Bilek led the Centurions (6-10 overall) with 24 points and center Vladimir Bilik added 20.

Westlake 50, Thousand Oaks 47--Thousand Oaks dropped two games behind Marmonte League-leading Simi Valley and Westlake won its first league game.

Thousand Oaks’ Kevin Martin led all players with 19 points at Westlake. Teammate John Bushart added 11 points and 4 rebounds.

Oak Park 70, Moorpark 65--Richard Chavez scored 7 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter to lift Oak Park (6-9, 2-3 in league play) past Moorpark in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park. Chavez also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Trailing, 43-32, at halftime, Moorpark (8-8, 3-2) tied the score, 51-51, after three quarters behind the play of Mel Margolis, who scored 13 of his game-high 33 points in the third period.

Chaminade 68, St. Genevieve 48--The Eagles made 13 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the Santa Fe League win at home.
