Winter Sports : Newbury Park Snaps Losing Streak, 55-50

Newbury Park High ended a 12-game losing streak by defeating Royal, 55-50, Wednesday night in a Marmonte League game at Royal.

Junior forward Wayne Cook scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and senior guard Steve Allison made five consecutive free throws in the last 30 seconds to secure the win for the Panthers, who improved to 5-14, 1-8 in league play.

Cook, who is averaging 15.7 points a game, had 21 points and 14 rebounds.

“It was Las Vegas time. We had one guy with 21 points and three guys with seven,” Coach Ken Barone said. “We finally got the monkey off our backs.

Thousand Oaks 55, Camarillo 51--The Lancers outscored Camarillo, 16-4, in the third quarter on the way to victory in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Kevin Martin scored a game-high 20 points and Todd Anderson added 16 for Thousand Oaks.

Sean Young had 15 points for Camarillo.

Oak Park 54, Bishop Diego 50--Senior John Sloan made two free throws with two seconds left in overtime to give the Eagles a Tri-Valley League win at Oak Park. Oak Park junior Richard Chavez scored underneath with one second left in regulation to force overtime.

Moorpark 67, Carpinteria 64--Senior Kelly Kira scored a season-high 28 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Musketeers to a Tri-Valley League win.

Oakwood 67, Yeshiva 50--Mitchell Butler had 41 points and 24 rebounds to lead Oakwood in a Liberty League game at home.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Thousand Oaks 52, Camarillo 44--The Lancers clinched at least a tie for first place in the Marmonte League with their 14th consecutive victory.

Center Barbara Tanner led Thousand Oaks (21-3, 10-0) with 22 points.

Newbury Park 80, Royal 38--Four Panthers scored in double figures as Newbury Park rolled to a Marmonte League victory at home.

Marlo Cormier had a game-high 16 points for Newbury Park.

Simi Valley 62, Westlake 55--Shannon Solway scored 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter of the Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 90, Antelope Valley 76--Steve Ward scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Monarchs to a Southern California Conference victory at Antelope Valley.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 92, Chaffey 55--Sheggaro Lattin scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Monarchs to a Southern California Conference victory at Valley.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Royal 5, Channel Islands 0--Goalie Karl Holt recorded his ninth consecutive shutout in a Marmonte League match at Channel Islands that assured Royal (19-1-2, 9-1) of at least a tie for the league title.

Simi Valley 7, Camarillo 3-- Senior striker Brad Beland scored three goals and assisted on another to lead the Pioneers to a Marmonte League win at Simi Valley.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Agoura 3, Thousand Oaks 0--The Chargers’ unbeaten streak reached 44 games with a nonleague victory at Horizon Hills Elementary School. Agoura improved to 18-0-3 overall.
