High School Basketball : Reseda Whips Grant by 83 Points

Five Reseda players scored in double figures--including Angie Smith with a game-high 28 points--as the Regents trounced Grant, 101-18, Thursday night in a girls’ West Valley League game at Grant.

Reseda clinched at least a tie for the league title with the win.

“It’s the most points we’ve ever scored,” Reseda Coach Andrea Francola said. “And we weren’t even pressing on defense or running our plays.”

Reseda’s Frieda Kalajian scored 20 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds. Jennifer Marzahl added 17 points for Reseda (15-1, 8-0 in league play), the defending City Section 3-A champion.

El Camino Real 74, Chatsworth 52--Senior Kerrie Marshall had 36 points and 20 rebounds--both season highs--as second-place El Camino Real rolled to a Valley League win at El Camino Real.

Marshall, who is averaging 28 points a game in league play, made 16 of 30 shots, including 4 of 4 free throws. Teammate Nicole Nelson came off the bench to score 10 points.

Chatsworth dropped to 9-5, 3-5.

North Hollywood 83, Birmingham 47--North Hollywood received 24 points and 12 rebounds from Sandrine Rocher and 12 points from Michelle Cabaldon to rout Birmingham in a West Valley League game at Birmingham.

North Hollywood is 12-4, 6-2.

Birmingham (3-5 in league play) was led by Amy Rubenroit who scored 16 points and Tracy McAdams with 10.

Louisville 64, St. Genevieve 33--Led by Kristin Carpenter (21 points and 20 rebounds) and Mary Hudson (12 points and 11 rebounds), Louisville cruised to a San Fernando Valley League victory at St. Genevieve.

San Fernando 39, Verdugo Hills 23--Kristie Flukers led San Fernando (6-6, 6-2) with 17 points and 15 rebounds and Obbie Brown grabbed 20 rebounds and scored 10 points in a Pac 6 League game at Verdugo Hills.

Verdugo Hills is 0-12, 0-8.

Notre Dame 42, Chaminade 31--Andrea Banducci scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead Notre Dame to a San Fernando Valley League victory at Chaminade.

Chaminade led, 23-22, at halftime, but Notre Dame outscored the Eagles, 20-8, in the second half behind the play of Banducci, a 6-1 junior center.

BOYS

North Hollywood 56, Sylmar 43--Balanced scoring from North Hollywood’s starting five propelled the Huskies in an East Valley League game at Sylmar.

North Hollywood (14-4, 7-1), which used only six players, was led by sophomore guard Tommy Byrdsong with 13 points. Dominic Nappi added 12 points and Dana Jones scored 9 and had 11 rebounds.

Chatsworth 90, Monroe 60--Five players scored in double figures as the Chancellors (10-8, 4-4 in league play) routed last-place Monroe at Chatsworth. Rick Garrick scored a game-high 19 points and David Waco added 15 points and 8 assists.

Faith Baptist 69, Bel-Air Prep 67--Jason Henderson scored 16 points to help Faith Baptist win a Delphic League game at Bel-Air Prep.

South Bay Lutheran 96, Highland Hall 53--Highland Hall’s Craig Ernst scored 24 points and had 15 rebounds, but the Hawks (9-9, 5-5) dropped their second Westside League game to first-place South Bay Lutheran (15-3, 8-0).
