Wrestling : Channel Islands, Newbury Park Tie for League Title

Channel Islands, which fell from fourth to oblivion in the Southern Section rankings after losing a dual meet to Newbury Park three weeks ago, won a share of the Marmonte League wrestling title by taking the league tournament Friday at Thousand Oaks High.

The Raiders outpointed Newbury Park--the other co-champion--168.5 to 150 in the league tournament.

Weight class winners from Channel Islands included Chris Corpus (108 pounds) and M. T. Merickel (135). Winners from Newbury Park included Kevin Mabry (101), Nick Domingo (115), Chris Kilbane (148) and Jeff Jay (194).

Other winners included: Simi Valley’s Bryan Ha (122); Thousand Oaks’ Steve Reed (157); Camarillo’s Tim Salter (129) and Trent Spangler (178); and Westlake’s Ali Sabbaghi (141), Billy Hunter (168) and Mike Monroe (heavyweight).

The three top finishers in each weight class qualified for the Southern Section 4-A Division preliminaries, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Edison High in Huntington Beach.

Channel wrestling: Although Dos Pueblos dominated in winning the Channel League title, several Ventura County wrestlers won their weight class. Dos Pueblos had 194 points, followed by Rio Mesa (111 1/2) and Buena (104 1/2).

Winners included: Rio Mesa’s Lupe Beltran (101 pounds) and Robby Cook (129); Hueneme’s Delfino Ochoa (115) and Don Young (heavyweight); Buena’s Billy Scannell (122) and Hector Martinez (141).

Frontier wrestling: Agoura captured the Frontier League tournament by scoring 123 points. Fillmore was second with 101, Moorpark had 91, Santa Paula had 67 and Calabasas had 46.

Winners included: Fillmore’s Steve Ponce (101) and Spanky Walsh (108); Moorpark’s Anthony Fajardo (148) and Marcus Wherry (heavyweight); and Santa Paula’s Jerry Hernandez (141).
