THE COLLEGES : Community College Roundup : Cerritos’ Streak Enough to Stop Orange Coast, 74-62

Brenda Longe and Shelly Schack scored 21 points each to lead Cerritos College to a 74-62 victory over Orange Coast in a Southern California women’s regional playoff basketball game Wednesday at Cerritos.

OCC trailed, 11-1 and 30-17, in the first half but tied the score, 34-34, with 17:05 left in the game.

But Cerritos (24-8) went on a 13-0 run before OCC finally scored again on a pair of free throws by Kim Ellerman to cut the lead to 47-36 with 11:39 left. Ellerman then fouled out with 10:43 left and the OCC offense turned to forward Gilly Powell.

Powell, a freshman who averaged 22 points a game, scored a game-high 28 points, including 21 in the second half and 17 of her team’s final 26 points after Ellerman fouled out.

OCC (16-15) cut the lead to 63-57 with 2:38 left, but Schack and Longe each made a steal and layup to put Cerritos up, 67-57, with 2:10 left.

OCC ends the season at 16-15. Cerritos plays host Los Angeles Valley Friday for a berth in the state tournament March 3-5 at American River College.

In nonconference softball:

San Diego Mesa 2, Golden West 1--Lorena Alves scored in the first and third innings, each time off RBI singles by Steffani Everett, to lead San Diego Mesa (6-3) at Golden West (3-6).

Fullerton 1, Rancho Santiago 0--Kristen Jacobs pitched four innings of relief, striking out five, to lead Fullerton (8-2) at Rancho Santiago (3-3). Jacobs (6-0) entered the game in the third inning with two runners on and no out. She worked out of the jam and allowed only one hit the rest of the way. Fullerton took the lead in the third. Casey Donaghu walked to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second. Consecutive singles by Julie Poulos and Kelle Meade scored Donaghu.

Cypress 2, Pasadena 0--Sandy Alvarino and Dee Shepard each scored on wild pitches to lead Cypress (3-4) at home.

In men’s tennis:

Saddleback 9, Fullerton 0--Mark Hansen, Saddleback’s No. 1 singles player, defeated Steve Lord of Fullerton, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Saddleback (4-0).

Riverside 6, Golden West 3--Riverside’s Mike Bennett defeated Marcelino Rosales at No. 1 singles, when Rosales retired from the match with an arm injury.

In South Coast Conference men’s volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Mt. San Antonio 0--Orange Coast won, 15-3, 15-1, 15-5, at Mt. San Antonio. Tim Glasgow had eight kills and four aces to lead OCC (4-0, 2-0). Matt Silva had four kills and four blocks for OCC.
