San Diego State Women Lose Chance to End Long Beach Winning Streak

The San Diego State women’s basketball team had a chance Tuesday to win its first game against Cal State Long Beach in 30 tries. The score was tied, 44-44, with 14:35 to play.

But Long Beach scored eight straight and went on a 12-4 run soon after to beat SDSU, 90-65, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game in Peterson Gym.

Long Beach (20-5, 16-0 in the PCAA) shot 62% from the field in the second half and outscored SDSU, 53-31, after holding a 37-34 lead at halftime.

Former Aztec guard Penny Toler scored 22 points and had 10 assists for Long Beach, which is ranked 10th in the nation. Teammates Angelique Lee (17 points) and Dana Wilkerson (16 points) each made 7 of 9 shots.

Chana Perry scored 20 for SDSU (19-9, 10-7), which shot only 32% in the second half. Jessica Haynes had 17 points and 18 rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Jeff Bickmore scored six of his 20 points in the last four minutes to lead Southern California College to a 93-91 victory over Christian Heritage College Tuesday in an NAIA District 3 quarterfinal game at Costa Mesa.

Southern California College (18-3) will advance to the semifinals against Biola. Christian Heritage (14-14) will play in the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament, which begins next week.

Southern California College made its first 10 shots and led at halftime, 53-43. Christian Heritage tied the game, 65-65, but never led.

Dave Kirksey, who had a game-high 23 points, scored after an offensive rebound to cut the lead to 93-91 with 15 seconds left. But Christian Heritage did not get off a good shot after SCC missed the front end of a one-and-one situation. Mark Kraatz had 21 points for Christian Heritage.

BASEBALL

Three consecutive home runs in the first inning of the first game sparked United States International University to a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Tuesday at USIU.

USIU (6-10-1) won the first game, 5-3, as Larry Oedewaldt hit a two-run home run and Ray Plantier and Bill Rumsey followed with solo homers off Glenn Barket (0-1), who didn’t get out of the first.

In the second game, Pat Rocco’s three-run homer in the first started a five-run inning in an 8-4 victory.

Jeff Oswalt (2-2) was the winner in the first game, and freshman Mike Whisonant (1-0) won the second. Wally Trice saved both games. Penn State is 0-4.

Jim Copas hit a home run to lead La Verne to a 5-3 victory over host UC San Diego in an NCAA Division II game.

UCSD’s Rick Nowak (4-1) allowed eight hits in nine innings. Gary Fessia led UCSD (7-3), going 2 for 4 with his third home run of the year.

Rick Wolfe got the victory for La Verne (7-7).

FOOTBALL

Paul Victoria, a 6-foot 2-inch, 235-pound linebacker from Hilmar High School in Merced County, has signed a letter of intent with San Diego State, the university announced Monday.

The Aztecs have four football scholarships still available out of a possible 30 for this year.
