Roundup : Vista Outlasts Hoover, 6-5, in Duel of Strikeout Artists

The starting pitchers created a breeze in Vista High School’s 6-5 baseball victory over Hoover Friday in the Warhawk tournament

Vista’s Jerry Stafford (1-0) struck out 15 batters and allowed only four hits in eight innings, and Felipe Preciado struck out 14 for Hoover (0-3).

Preciado tired in the seventh inning, when he allowed three runs that made it 5-5 before being replaced. Vista’s Chuck Forehand singled in Herbie Weston for the winner.

Hoover scored its runs in the fifth on two hits, three walks and a hit batter.

In other Warhawk tournament games:

Point Loma 8, Mt. Miguel 2--Point Loma’s Tom Collins singled in two runs in a six-run fifth inning at Point Loma. Sabino Loaiza (1-0) went the distance for Point Loma (2-0-1).

With the score tied, 2-2, in in the fifth, Loaiza walked, Jeff Gaddis singled, Isreal Stanley doubled in Loaiza and Collins hit a long single off Mt. Miguel starter and loser Calvin Clements (0-1) for two runs. Craig Kelso also had an RBI single in the inning for Point Loma. Mt. Miguel is 0-2-1.

Castle Park 8, San Dieguito 7--Juan Beltran and Cesar Gutierrez each hit two-run home runs for Castle Park at San Dieguito.

Grossmont 13, Bonita Vista 6--Donnie O’Brien led a 10-hit Grossmont attack with a home run and three RBIs at Grossmont.

Mike Rendina also had a home run and three RBIs and Kent Smith had a double, a home run and two RBIs for Grossmont.

Randy Abshier had two RBIs for Bonita Vista (2-1).

Valhalla 6, Sweetwater 5--Four errors helped visiting Valhalla overcome Larry Meza’s two-run home run.

Orange Glen 14, Monte Vista 7-- Brian Paul hit a grand slam to give visiting Monte Vista a 6-0 lead, but Orange Glen scored 14 consecutive runs with the help of nine walks and four errors in a game called after 5 1/2 innings because of darkness.

Herman Moreno had three hits and Mike Ballard two hits and two RBIs for Orange Glen (2-1-1).

Goodman-Pirate Classic

Fallbrook 9, El Camino 3--Mike Turiace and Andy Walker each hit two-run homers for visiting Fallbrook in a game called after six innings because of darkness. Left-hander Jeff Lawrence gained the victory.

Patrick Henry 4, Carlsbad 2--Cory Powell had three hits and Mike Jackel two RBIs for host Patrick Henry. Winning pitcher Greg Alison was one of six Patrick Henry players who pitched.

Oceanside 5, Rancho Buena Vista 4--Fred Armijo hit a two-run first-inning home run as Oceanside (1-0) edged Rancho Buena Vista (0-2). Dwayne Wilson had an RBI double in the sixth. Mike Norris (1-0) picked up the win.
