Thirty-eight Southern California high schools will compete in today’s fifth Mission Viejo Girls’ Invitational track and field meet at Mission Viejo High School.

Orange County will be represented by 14 schools, including Canyon, Capistrano Valley, Edison, El Toro, Laguna Hills, Santa Ana, Santa Ana Valley, Villa Park and host Mission Viejo.

Mission Viejo, the two-time defending meet champion, features one of Orange County’s best sprinters in Sheri Bertell.

Bertell, who qualified in last year’s state meet but had to scratch from the event because of injuries suffered in an auto accident, has best times of 12.09 seconds in the 100 meters and 25.40 in the 200 meters.

The Diablos also have Suzanne Kerho, who has recorded bests of 15.0 in the 110-meter intermediate hurdles and 46.9 in the 300-meter low hurdles, and Lisa Fager, who has leaped 37-feet 5-inches in the triple jump.

Allison Franke, a multiple-event star from Canyon, will compete in the discus. Franke won the event at the Southern Section 3-A and Masters championships last May.

Franke has a good chance of breaking the meet record of 134-6. Last week, Franke threw 139-10, the third-best mark in the state this season.

The meet will start with the 300-meter hurdles at 9 a.m. The final event, the mile relay, is scheduled for 4 p.m. Admission at the gate is $4, $2 and $1.

Several Orange County teams will travel to Occidental College in Pasadena today for the Pasadena Games track and field meet, which begins at 5 p.m.

Eighty-five high schools from throughout California and parts of Arizona and New Mexico will compete in invitational and open events in boys’ and girls’ divisions.

The boys’ invitational 3,200-meter run will feature area distance stars Shanon Winkelman of Marina and Eddie Lavelle of Corona del Mar.

Winkelman and Lavelle, who finished a close one-two in the two-mile at the Beach Cities Invitational last Saturday, will face plenty of competition.

Entrants in the 3,200 meters include Albuquerque Sandia’s Chip Smith, the third-fastest 1,500-meter runner in the nation last year (3:51.4); Jaime Ortega and Derek Powers of 1987 state cross-country champion Arroyo, and Palos Verdes’ David Scudamore, the 1987 Southern Section 4-A cross-country champion.

Corona del Mar’s Jim Robbins and Esperanza’s John Carrow will run in the invitational 800 meters, featuring the fastest field this season.

Robbins (1:54.6) and Carrow (1:56.8) will face Crescenta Valley’s Morgan Bateman (1:53.98); Point Loma’s Joe Bessand (1:56.0); Arcadia’s Rick Provenzano (1:55.15), and Redlands’ Eric Smith (1:55.89).

Marina’s Kevin Magula and Josh McHugh will compete in the pole vault, as will Corona del Mar’s Sean Woolsey.

In the girls’ events, Esperanza’s Danielle Reaves, the 1987 Southern Section 3-A runner-up in the 300-meter low hurdles at 44.5, will compete in that event along with teammate Emily Thiebaud, who placed third to Reaves in the 3-A.

Other area schools in the girls’ division are Santa Ana Valley, featuring Maricela Benavides in the distance medley, and Esperanza’s 1,600-meter relay team.
