Bob Boyd, who retired from coaching in 1985, announced that he will coach the Riverside Community College basketball team for one season.

Boyd, 57, formerly coached at Mississippi State, Seattle and USC.

He will fill in at Riverside for David Waxman, who is taking a sabbatical leave to finish his doctorate degree in education.

Boyd said he intends to continue to live in Palm Desert, about an hour’s drive from Riverside.

Before meeting the press and some of the college’s faculty, Boyd met with returning Riverside players. During the hourlong news conference, Boyd expressed his renewed interest in coaching, but he stopped short of saying he was back for good.

“I have missed coaching,” Boyd said, “but I’m not looking past the year here. In June (1989), after I fulfill this commitment, I have no plans. I’m not using this as a stepping stone to other possibilities.”
