Cal State Long Beach considers Cleveland High’s Bob Braswell a strong candidate for an assistant’s position with the 49er basketball program, according to a Long Beach coach.

Seth Greenberg, a 49er assistant, said Tuesday that the school expects assistant Dereck Whittenburg to leave the program for a similar position at North Carolina State, his alma mater. Whittenburg may leave by the end of the week, Greenberg said. Coach Joe Harrington is in San Diego for a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. meeting and was unavailable for comment.

“Bob has done an outstanding job with Cleveland and we have tremendous respect for him,” Greenberg said. “When the position comes available, he’s one of the people we’ll consider.”

Greenberg declined to name other candidates. Braswell also was reluctant to talk, saying he his focusing his attention on the Cleveland program. Braswell, 26, has coached the Cavaliers for three seasons, compiling a 56-14 record.

“It’s very flattering to be considered for a college job but I’m not ready to make any decisions,” he said. “I have a job to do here, to prepare Cleveland for the summer league season.”
