Hawking Quits to Pursue Job at College Level

More than six weeks after typing his letter of resignation, Bob Hawking confirmed Thursday that he had ended his 14-year tenure as the Simi Valley High basketball coach to pursue a position as a college assistant.

Hawking resigned April 19 and waited until after his team’s awards banquet Wednesday to make the announcement. Hawking indicated that he will make a second announcement when he is hired as a college assistant.

“I’m pursuing other coaching opportunities and expect to be coaching next season,” he said. “There will be a formal announcement within a short time span. I can’t detail it now, but it will be as a college assistant.”

Dean Bradshaw, a Simi Valley assistant for seven years who has served as the interim coach in recent weeks, is expected to replace Hawking. He will will interview with Principal Dave Ellis, perhaps as soon as today.

Hawking, who retained his job as physical education teacher, compiled a 230-119 record, including an 81-9 mark the past three seasons when All-American Don MacLean and Shawn DeLaittre played for him. The Pioneers, who were 28-4 this season, won three consecutive Marmonte League titles and this season’s Southern Section 4-A Division championship.

Hawking had coached MacLean, DeLaittre and his son Butch in youth leagues and said he postponed any career moves until the three players completed their eligibility at Simi Valley.
