Mayne, Hamelin and Buccheri Invited to U.S.A. Baseball Camp

Three Orange County baseball players are among 41 top amateur players invited Thursday to the U.S.A. senior baseball team’s training camp by the U.S. Baseball Federation.

Cal State Fullerton catcher Brent Mayne, Rancho Santiago first baseman Bob Hamelin and Golden West center fielder Jim Buccheri will compete to make the 20-member U.S. team that will play in the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Mayne, a sophomore who will play Saturday in Fullerton’s first game of the College World Series, is hitting .401. He had his Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.-record 38-game hitting streak broken Monday in the NCAA South Regional championship game against Texas A&M;, when he went 0 for 3.

Hamelin, who was drafted by the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, set state community college records this season with 31 home runs and 105 RBIs.

Buccheri, Golden West’s leadoff hitter, stole 47 bases in 48 attempts to set school, Orange County and South Coast Conference records. Buccheri, who led his team in hitting at .418, was named the co-most valuable player in the conference.

Mark Marquess, who guided Stanford to the NCAA baseball championship in 1987, will coach the U.S. team. Players will report to training camp June 13 in Millington, Tenn.. The roster will be cut to 30 players after three days. The final roster will be determined in August.
