Bill Mazurie, a starting guard on Foothill High School’s basketball team last season, is playing for Capistrano Valley this summer and plans to transfer there in the fall, according to Mark Thornton, Capistrano Valley coach.

“He played for us over the weekend and his father told me the family is looking for a home in our attendance area,” Thornton said. “He can’t register for classes until he establishes residency, but he’s filled out the necessary paper work that allows him to play for us this summer.”

Mazurie, a 6-foot 1-inch senior, averaged 12 points per game for Foothill last season and helped the Knights finish second in the Century League. He was a first-team all-league selection.

Jim Reames, Foothill coach, said he wasn’t surprised by the move.

“I started hearing rumors a month ago,” Reames said. “Bill was supposed to go out for spring football, and when he didn’t, I called his father and had a meeting with him. His father said he didn’t like our system and wanted Bill playing with better players. I wished him well.”

Mazurie became the second prominent athlete to leave Foothill this year. Earlier, running back Johnny Mountain transferred to Anaheim, where he was reunited with former Foothill Coach Ted Mullen.
