Area Roundup : Women’s Pro Volleyball Begins Saturday

The Women’s Professional Volleyball Tour will stop at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach Saturday and Sunday for a tournament including some of the sport’s top players.

Competing in the tournament will be the top three teams: Linda Chisolm and Jackie DeSilva; Nina Matthies and Julie Schaar; Kathy Gregory and Janice Opalinski. The purse is $10,000.

Two Huntington Beach soccer players have been selected to attend Olympic Development Program camps this summer in the Western United States.

Devon Fitzpatrick of the North Huntington Beach Breakers and Pacifica High School is playing at the girls’ 19-and-under camp at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., this week.

Daniel Barber, who plays for the North Huntington Beach Terminators and Pacifica High, spent last week at the boys’ 17 1/2-and-under camp at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash.

The two are among 42 players from the California Youth Soccer Assn.-South who were chosen for the camps. The players already have spent a week in Guadalajara, Mexico, at the World Cup Training Camp and represented the California Youth Soccer Assn.-South in competition in Sacramento and Portland, Ore., in May.

The Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club will play host to a 1988 “fun day” of mixed triples competition on July 18. Nine local lawn bowling clubs are to participate--Casa del Sol, Laguna Beach, Long Beach, Meadows-Irvine, Newport Harbor, Recreation Park, Saddleback, Santa Ana and The Groves, all members of the Southwest Division of the American Lawn Bowls Assn.

Competition will begin at 10 a.m. at the Newport Harbor club at 1550 Crown Drive North in Corona del Mar. Competition will be held in all 16 rinks of the club’s two bowling greens. The event is open to the public.

The Southern California Slo-Two-Pitch Softball Assn. is accepting men’s “C” and “D” teams for the fourth Summer Festival Softball Slo-Two-Pitch tournament on July 23. The tournament will be played at Hart Park in Orange, starting at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $150 per team. All teams are guaranteed to play at least three games. For information, call (213) 866-8685.

There will be a series of five all-comer track and field meets at Saddleback College beginning Tuesday and running each Tuesday through Aug. 9. Meets begin at 5 p.m. with a three-mile cross-country run at 7 p.m. The fee for unlimited entry each week is $1. For information, call Gene Gurule at 528-4545.
