Ocean View High School was shut out last week by Newport Harbor, so it was little surprise that during practice this week, the focus was on offense.

The payoff came Friday night, when the Seahawks scored a 20-3 victory over Santa Ana Valley in front of 600 at Huntington Beach High.

“Offensively, we got something going tonight,” Ocean View Coach Guy Carrozzo said. “After last week, we emphasized offense all week. Nothing we got tonight was really easy, either.”

Dean Martinez, who rushed for 137 yards and 1 touchdown in 24 attempts, carried the bulk of the load for the Seahawks (2-1). And he got a fair share of help form John Arnold, who scored 8 points, kicking field goals of 37 and 27 yards and making both his extra-point attempts.

Ocean View scored a field goal on its first possession, and the outcome was never much in doubt.

Santa Ana Valley (0-1-2) struggled in the first half, managing only two first downs, both on penalties. Ocean View totaled 13 first downs in the first half, 11 of them rushing.

Ocean View drove as deep as the Falcon 13 on its second possession, but a holding penalty helped prevent the Seahawks from scoring a touchdown, and they failed to score when Arnold’s 34-yard field-goal attempt was blocked by Coury Martinez.

Ocean View took a 10-0 lead by halftime after quarterback Randy Karliner sneaked in from the 1-yard line, capping a drive that included his 32-yard pass to Jason Merkel.

Augustine Osegura, the Santa Ana Valley quarterback, was ineffective in the first half, completing 2 of 10 passes for 12 yards with 1 interception.

James Stewart replaced him on the Falcons’ first possession of the second half but didn’t manage a first down, and then Osegura returned and directed an impressive drive.

Osegura was much more on the mark, completing 4 of 5 passes in one stretch, including a 43-yarder to Terry Ross, who was finally brought down at the 7-yard line.

But on third down, Osegura was sacked by Todd Norman, who led the Ocean View defense along with Mike Burdick.

The Falcons were forced to settle for a 36-yard field goal by Manop Phinovwong, averting a shutout and closing the lead to 10-3.

Ocean View stretched it to 17-3 on an 11-yard run by Martinez, and the Seahawks added a final field goal with 1:12 remaining after Scott Long recovered an Osegura fumble in Santa Ana Valley territory.
