Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Sunny Hills Has Trouble With Campers in 86-58 Loss

Lakewood High School, one of the top teams in the Southern Section’s 5-AA division, had little trouble with Sunny Hills Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Santa Ana tournament, rolling to an 86-58 victory with cousins Brian and Victor Camper leading the way.

Brian Camper, a 6-foot 5-inch guard headed for Arizona State, scored 24 points on a variety of shots, and Victor Camper, a 6-8 forward headed for Lamar, threw his weight around inside to score 13 points and grab 11 rebounds as Lakewood won its fourth consecutive game without a loss.

Sunny Hills (2-1) stayed even with Lakewood through the first quarter and then failed to score for nearly 3 minutes in the second and fell behind, 30-18. The Lancers made a good run at Lakewood in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 7 points after a pair of 3-point shots by guard Jon Beuerlein.

But a taller, deeper Lakewood team built a 56-39 lead midway through the third quarter and was never threatened thereafter. Lakewood won a 5-A division title in 1982, but Coach Tim Sweeney thinks this year’s team is equally talented with more depth.

“We played pretty well at points, but we missed an awful lot of inside shots or we could have been devasting,” Sweeney said. “We had a little fun tonight.”

Sunny Hills provided some of the entertainment, commiting 26 turnovers and making only 15 of 29 free-throw attempts. Forward Walter Mitter turned in the only steady performance for the Lancers, scoring 14 points.
