San Diego Improves to 4-0 With Victory Over Point Loma

Host San Diego employed a full-court press and converted 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to overcome Point Loma, 57-52, in boys’ basketball Wednesday night.

Trailing at the end of three quarters, 38-33, San Diego outscored Point Loma, 24-14, in the fourth.

“It was a really sluggish game,” said Dennis Kane, San Diego’s coach. “Having a whole week off really hurt us.”

Reynard Wells scored 24 points to lead San Diego (4-0), and Clark James had 11.

In other nonleague games

San Dieguito 52, Oceanside 44--Sophomore guard Matt de La Pena scored 25 points--on 10-of-16 shooting, including 4 3-pointers--for San Dieguito (2-3). Brian Malewicz added 17 points, and Chris Houk had 10 rebounds for San Dieguito. Oceanside is 0-2.

Orange Glen 80, San Marcos 70--Orange Glen finally got the help it needed from its football team, which reached the section 3-A finals last weekend. Cree Morris scored 13 points and Lenny McGill added 8 to lead Orange Glen at San Marcos. Morris and McGill both played football. Shawn Maklin led Orange Glen (1-4) with 29 points. Jay Kitti had 26 points to lead San Marcos (1-1).

University City 66, Rancho Buena Vista 62--Todd Fellars and Greg Porter each scored 18 points, but Rancho Buena Vista fell to 2-5.

Metro Conference

Chula Vista 69, Montgomery 44--Ritchie Greaser and Derek Chapman scored 12 points apiece and Sean Desmond added 11 for host Chula Vista, which outscored Montgomery, 24-9, in the third quarter. Alberto Maldonado scored 20 points for Montgomery (0-6, 0-2).

Sweetwater 84, Mar Vista 34--Sweetwater jumped to a 22-2 lead after the first quarter and cruised to the victory at Mar Vista. Carlos Campbell and Cortez Rice scored 12 points apiece for Sweetwater (6-0, 1-0). Joe McDowell added 11 points as all 12 Sweetwater players scored. Elisha Burns paced Mar Vista (0-4, 0-1) with 8 points.

Girls’ basketball

Mt. Carmel tournament

Poway 55, La Jolla 50--Poway (2-1) led by 10 points most of the way with Laura Nugent scoring 18 points. Colie Anderson led all scorers with 34 points for La Jolla.
