Prep Soccer : Katella’s Bravo Gets 11 Saves, Shutout

Goalie Paul Bravo made 11 saves to help Katella High School take sole possession of first place in the Empire League with a 1-0 victory over El Dorado Wednesday at Katella.

The victory moves the Knights (10-5-4 overall, 4-1-2 in league play) one game ahead of the Golden Hawks (9-3-2, 3-2-2).

Sophomore Armando Orizaba broke a scoreless tie 15 minutes into the first half with a goal from 15 feet out. It was Orizaba’s sixth goal in seven league matches and his 13th for the season.

Goalie Bill Stevens made 19 saves for El Dorado.

In the Century League:

Canyon 3, Santa Ana Valley 0--Andy Birozy, Richard Bein and Steve Hope scored for visiting Canyon. Canyon (13-2-5, 3-0-4) led, 2-0, at halftime. Santa Ana Valley is 0-5-2 in league play.

Foothill 0, Villa Park 0--David Wetzler had 3 saves for Villa Park (10-4-6, 1-2-4) and Lance Anderson had 4 saves for Foothill, which is 1-2-4 in league play.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Ana 3, El Modena 2--Santa Ana Coach Ernie Salgado moved Gus Plasencia out of the goal and into the center-forward position for the game, and Plasencia responded by scoring three goals. He scored at 3 minutes and again at 32 minutes, off an assist from Carlos Cardoso, to give Santa Ana a 2-0 lead at halftime. A minute into the second half, Plasencia scored his third goal for the Saints (15-1-5, 5-0-2). Tom Saenz and Ronnie Murrieta scored late in the second half for El Modena (6-6-3, 2-4-1).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 1, Buena Park 0--Scott Miller scored on a penalty kick in the second half to give host Troy (7-0 in league play) the victory.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Orange 2, Laguna Beach 0--Mark Vasquez and Gustavo Bonell scored goals for Orange (7-9-4, 5-5-2). Goalie Tres Martin made 4 saves for Orange. Tyler Parks made 12 saves for Laguna Beach (3-6-3 in league play).

Woodbridge 2, Laguna Hills 2--Jeff Clark of visiting Laguna Hills tied the game with a minute left. Brian Beamon had the other goal for Laguna Hills (6-3-7, 4-2-6). Bruno Muranatto had both goals for Woodbridge (7-4-5, 7-1-4).

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 1, Tustin 1--Scott Casey scored for host Tustin (5-4-8, 1-2-4). Rob Ablett scored for Estancia (2-2-3 in league).

Corona del Mar 3, Newport Harbor 1--Corona del Mar center-forward Enrique Galli scored 2 late goals on crosses from Joey Perez to break a 1-1 tie. Pat Callaghan scored 5 minutes into the second half to give the Sea Kings (9-5-6, 3-2-2) a 1-0 lead. Tommy Walker tied the score for Newport Harbor (5-6-4, 2-4-1).

University 1, Saddleback 0--Garrick Gallardo scored with 14 minutes left in the first half as host University (4-6-3, 2-4-1) gave Saddleback its first defeat in league play. Goalie Rob Haworth made 9 saves in shutting out the Roadrunners. Miguel Ochoa made 3 saves for Saddleback (12-5-4, 6-1-1).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 0, Fountain Valley 0 (OT)--Goalie Joey Penaflor made 2 saves for host Fountain Valley (15-6-2, 3-3-1). Mike Juric made 4 saves in the first half and Ryan Bertonia made 6 saves for Edison (4-1-2 in league play).

Ocean View 10, Westminster 1--Mark Roosen had 3 goals and 4 assists to lead visiting Ocean View. Andrew Wind and Jed Smith added 2 goals apiece for Ocean View (11-7-3, 4-3).

In Angelus League girls’ soccer:

Mater Dei 2, Rosary 1--Kari Marshall and Diane Awadallahscored goals for visiting Mater Dei (16-4-2, 7-1-1). Margaret Braun assisted on Marshall’s goal and Christine Awadallah assisted on the other score.
