USD Baseball Sets Record It Doesn’t Want

The University of San Diego baseball team set a school record for consecutive losses with 13 after visiting Santa Clara swept a West Coast Athletic Conference double header Saturday at Cunningham Stadium. The previous record of 12 was set in 1985.

USD (15-24-1, 1-13) allowed two unearned runs in the top of the eighth of a scheduled seven-inning game to lose the first game, 5-4. The Toreros scored once in the bottom of the eighth, but it was not enough.

The Toreros did not get as close in the second game, losing 17-3 as Santa Clara (29-15, 7-4) scored in every inning but the sixth. Santa Clara led, 6-3, after four and added five runs in the fifth and six in the seventh.

John Danis went three for four to lead Point Loma Nazarene to an 8-3 victory and a split of a Golden State Athletic Conference double header at Christ College Irvine.

Tom Martin, the winning pitcher in the first game, also was two for two with an RBI. Paul Hammontree went the distance as Christ College (5-24, 2-15) won the second game, 4-3. PLNC is 18-21 and 6-11 in the GSAC.

TRACK

San Diego State split its triangular meet with Fresno State and UC Irvine. The Aztecs beat UC Irvine, 71-55, and lost Fresno State, 75-55. Osmond Swanegan led the Aztecs with a victory in the 400-meter hurdles (51.59). Also winning their events for SDSU were Matt Large in the 800 meters (1:50.60), Floyd Barco in the 400 meters (47.23), Pat Thiss in the hammer (196-11) and Fred Morgan in the javelin (107-1).

UC San Diego defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 77-58, in a nonconference women’s track meet. The Tritons were led by Yoette Marzullo’s victories in the long jump (16-4 3/4) and the 400 meters (1:00.60).

The Point Loma Nazarene men’s team, behind Tommy Anderberg’s firsts in the javelin (216-1), shot (46-8) and discus (148-1), defeated UCSD, 97-48. UCSD’s Marc Lawler qualified for NCAA Division III national championships with a mark of 15-1 in the pole vault.

SOFTBALL

UC San Diego, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III, swept host Occidental in a nonconference doubleheader, 13-12 and 8-1. The Tritons’ Kathy Fogg struck out six and Julie Stillman was two for three with a triple and three RBIs in the first game. Michelle Mundy went five for eight with one RBI in the two games and Pam Harnack was three for four with four RBI in the second game for UCSD (24-7).

San Jose State swept San Diego State, 6-0 and 5-1, in a Big West Conference double header Saturday.

Michelle Wesson doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Valerie Finley for the Aztecs’ only run of the day. Lisa Perettie struck out five in the second game for SDSU (17-25, 7-15).
