Prep Baseball : Roundup : El Modena’s Esposito Keeps Winning With 8-3 Victory Over Villa Park

Senior right-hander Marcus Esposito went the distance to pick up his eighth victory of the season against one loss as El Modena High School defeated Villa Park, 8-3, in a Century League baseball game Friday at El Modena.

Shortstop Mike Vermillon was two for two with a double, and first baseman Cale Shephard had a two-run homer for El Modena, his third of the season.

El Modena is 9-6 overall, 7-2 in league play. Villa Park is 4-5 in the league.

In other Century League games:

Foothill 7, Santa Ana Valley 0--Junior right-hander Kent Donnelly allowed two hits to lead Foothill at Santa Ana Valley.

Donnelly struck out eight batters to improve his record to 5-2. Foothill is 13-6 overall, 7-2 in league play).

Senior first baseman Corey Parker went two for three with four runs batted in.

Santa Ana 9, Canyon 4--Right-hander Adam Chavez pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief to pick up his fourth victory of the season without a loss, and his second win over Canyon this week. Catcher Julio Vargas had two hits in four at-bats for host Santa Ana (12-7, 7-2). Canyon dropped to 2-7 in league play.

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 12, St. Margaret’s 1--Senior right-hander Bryan James allowed only three hits and struck out eight batters en route to his fifth victory in six decisions. He also had two triples in three at-bats and three runs batted in. Junior center fielder Mark Baltodano went three for four with three runs batted in for host Liberty Christian (14-2, 4-0). St. Margaret’s slipped to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the league.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 4, Sonora 3 -- Darby Carmichael’s bases-loaded single up the middle drove home the winning run for Troy in the bottom of the seventh. Troy (12-5, 7-2) benefited from two Sonora errors in the seventh. Matt Carter drove home two runs with a home run and a single.

Fullerton 20, Buena Park 2--First baseman Chris Rubal went five for five with a homer and four runs batted in, and second baseman Mark DeGuiseppi was three for four with five runs batted in to pace host Fullerton (9-7-1, 6-3). Fullerton scored seven runs in the first inning and nine in the fourth. Starter Rene Arias, one of four Fullerton pitchers, picked up his seventh victory in nine decisions.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 5, Santa Margarita 2--Mark Carrillo (2-0) pitched a five-hitter, striking out six for the Lancers (9-8-1, 6-2) at Orange Lutheran. Carrillo also had an RBI double.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 7, Savanna 4--Chad Marlow went four for four with two RBIs to lead Brea-Olinda’s 13-hit attack. Host Brea-Olinda improves to 8-10 overall, 4-5 in league play.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 10, Laguna Beach 4--Left fielder Frank Waugh went two for four with a triple and three runs batted in, and first baseman Chad Poulos had three hits in four at-bats, including a double, to pace host Trabuco Hills (11-4, 8-1). Right-hander John Shetland picked up the victory in relief with a 2 1/3-inning stint.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 7, El Toro 2--Mission Viejo (13-5, 6-3) scored five runs in the fourth inning behind a pair of two-run doubles by Troy Kopp and Lance Sabella. Shawn Drinkwater had a solo home run for El Toro in the third. El Toro is 5-4 in the league.

San Clemente 4, Dana Hills 1--Mike Murphy had two hits, including a home run, and Rick Brail had two RBIs for the Tritons (3-15, 2-6) at San Clemente.

Irvine 10, Capistrano Valley 7--Randy Martin went three for four with two runs and Bowen Ota was two for three with two runs to lead visiting Irvine (10-9, 5-4). Buster Nietzke had two RBIs for Capistrano Valley (13-6, 6-3), which dropped into a first-place tie with Mission Viejo.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 10, Edison 4--Daniel Hernandez and Chris Christopherson had three RBIs for the Seahawks (13-7, 5-4) at Ocean View. Christopherson hit a three-run homer in the in the fourth to give Ocean View at 9-4 lead.
