Shortstop Gino Tagliaferri of Kennedy High and eight other Valley-area players have been selected to a 20-member team that will represent the City Section in an all-star baseball game against a group of Orange County players on June 15 at 7 p.m. at USC’s Dedeaux Field.

Tagliaferri led the Valley in home runs this season with 13.

Other Valley-area players selected are third baseman Rich Aude, catcher Eric Johnson and pitcher Derek Wallace of Chatsworth, outfielder Jason Shapiro and catcher Adam Zutler of Taft, first baseman Tim Costic of Monroe, outfielder Eddie Chavez of Poly and catcher Rudy Sanchez of San Fernando.

The players were chosen after a tryout last weekend at University High. The City Section will be coached by Bob Moroney of Bell, Ron Kasparian of Westchester and Kermit Taylor of Washington.

Shortstop Jason Evans of Chatsworth and catcher Casey Burrill of Hart have been chosen to play in the California Baseball Coaches Assn.’s North-South series this weekend in Fresno.

In addition, Evans and pitcher Derek Wallace of Chatsworth have been selected to compete in the U. S. Olympic Festival that runs July 20-30 in Oklahoma City.

Peter Washington, a two-year standout from College of the Canyons, has given an oral commitment to play baseball next season at Cal Lutheran. Washington was a designated-hitter for the Cougars.

John Tomac of Chatsworth remains the top American in the Milk Race, but he is being challenged for that status in the longest bicycle race in an English-speaking country by Celestial Seasonings teammate Gary Mulder of Boulder, Colo.

Tomac is in 19th place overall--1:42 behind overall leader Olaf Lurvik of Norway--after Tuesday’s 79-mile stage that concluded in Harrogate, England. Mulder is in 20th, two seconds behind Tomac.

The 1,200 mile race concludes Saturday.
