Dodgers Choose El Dorado’s Nevin as Draft Continues
Phil Nevin of El Dorado High School, Julio Vargas of Santa Ana High School, Tim Moore of La Habra High School, and Wayne Helm of Pepperdine were all taken Tuesday as baseball’s amateur draft continued.
Nevin, a shortstop who helped El Dorado to the Southern Section 5-A title, was taken by the Dodgers, and now faces a choice. He has signed to play football at Cal State Fullerton and planned to play baseball for the Titans. National Collegiate Athletic Assn. rules would allow him to play college football, but not baseball, even if he signed with the Dodgers.
Vargas, a catcher, was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies. He will attend a community college, most likely Rancho Santiago, if he doesn’t sign.
Moore, also a shortstop, was taken by the Chicago Cubs. He has college offers from USC and UC Irvine.
Helm, a pitcher also from Laguna Hills High School, was picked by the Angels. Helm played one season at the University of Arizona before transferring to Pepperdine where he was a junior last season.
