Westminster’s Shelly Tochluk Signs to Run Track at UC Irvine

Shelly Tochluk, a standout 400-meter runner from Westminster High School, has signed a letter of intent to attend UC Irvine in the fall.

Tochluk, who led the county this season with a 400-meter time of 55.77 seconds--fifth best in county history--placed second in the Southern Section 4-A, third in the Masters, and fifth at the state meet.

Her 400 time would rank third on the Irvine women’s all-time list.

Tochluk, the Sunset League’s athlete of the year, also led the county this season in the 200 meters (25.41).

Jason Neben of Orange Lutheran High School, the second-leading rusher in Orange County last season, has told Cal State Fullerton Coach Gene Murphy that he will be a walk-on candidate for the football team this fall.

Neben, a three-sport star, rushed for 1,489 yards and 13 touchdowns in 10 games as an option quarterback for Orange Lutheran. The yardage total was second only to Servite running back Derek Brown. Neben also had five interceptions.
