Three football players from the San Gabriel Valley are listed among the top 100 high school seniors by the Sporting News: wide receiver Jeremy Smith from Bishop Amat in La Puente, tight end Elic Mahone of Muir in Pasadena and running back Marshawn Thompson from Bassett of La Puente.

Smith, 6-feet and 175 pounds, was an All-CIF Southern Section and Los Angeles Times All-San Gabriel Valley first-team selection as a junior when he caught 82 passes for 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns to lead his team to the Division I finals. He returned two punts for touchdowns and scored another rushing.

Thompson, 6-1 and 190, was an All-Southern Section and Times All-San Gabriel Valley second-team choice as a junior after rushing for 1,717 yards and 16 touchdowns in 301 carries.

Two sprinters from Duarte High School will compete in the first Jack in the Box Invitational track and field meet at 3:45 p.m. Sunday at UCLA’s Drake Stadium.

Phetima Woods and Jeanine Stewart will run in the girls high school 100-meter dash. They are expected to receive their toughest competition from sprint sensation Angela Burnham from Rio Mesa in Oxnard, who won the 100 and 200 meters at the CIF state finals in June.

The Cal State Los Angeles men’s track team has signed three junior college transfers to letters of intent for next season:

Richard Doering from Riverside City College in the javelin, Raul Hernandez of L.A. Trade Tech in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs and Brian McCleery from Saddleback in the high jump. All will be juniors next season.

McCleery, who attended Weber State University in Utah as a freshman before transferring to Saddleback for his sophomore season, cleared 7-2 last season.

Doering finished first in the javelin with a throw of 221-6 at the state community college championships in leading Riverside to the team title. Hernandez finished third in 10,000 meters at the same meet.

Two families from Covina will compete in the finals of the Avco Family Bowling Tournament on Aug. 11-13 in Washington, D.C.

Jennifer Gibboney and her stepfather, Dennis Ferren, will compete in the prep division for ages 11 and younger and Wendy Lesley and her mother, Bonnie, are entered in the junior division for ages 12 to 14.

The teams qualified for the national event by winning divisions in state tournament play. Winners in the national competition will receive up to $5,000 in college scholarship funds. Gibboney and Lesley have already won a $500 college scholarship.
