ODDS AND ENDS

Coy Collins, Loara High School’s star running back, missed Friday’s Southern Section Division III playoff game because of a deep thigh bruise. Collins, who gained 1,666 yards during the regular season, was injured in last week’s Empire League finale against El Dorado. Without Collins, the Saxons lost, 3-0, to Santa Ana.

Sunny Hills, the top-seeded team in the Southern Section Division VI playoffs, sacked Kennedy quarterback Vince Church five times and recorded four tackles for losses in a 28-0 first-round shutout.

It only got worse for Troy, which was held to four yards total offense in the first half of its Division VI playoff game against Western. In the second half, Troy was held to only two, and the Warriors lost, 13-0.

ON THE RECORD

‘Oh, God. I thought I was going to kill myself for that fake punt. We came into the game thinking that we’re not going to hold anything back. We threw everything at them but the kitchen sink.’ -- Roger Takahashi, La Quinta coach, on the Aztecs’ trick plays, some of which worked and some of which didn’t in a 19-14 victory over Valencia.

‘There were some big holes out there tonight. I just tried to read the blocks and make the right moves.’ -- Shane Sherman, Edison running back, who ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns in the Chargers’ 20-10 Division I playoff victory over Crespi.

‘I was concerned coming in. I didn’t know how we’d react after such an emotional loss last week that cost us the league championship and the county championship.’ -- Bob Johnson, El Toro coach, after second-ranked El Toro had beaten Gahr, 43-8, in the first round of the Division III playoffs, one week after a 22-21 loss to Capistrano Valley.

‘I told our kids to be prepared for something tough.’ -- Ken Sutch, Paramount coach, after his defending Division III champions struggled to hold off El Modena, 13-3.
