In the end, it was Napolean who brought on Chaminade High’s Waterloo.

Despite sitting out the fourth quarter of a Southern Section Division VII quarterfinal game Friday night, Lompoc tailback Napolean Kaufman rushed for 193 yards in 16 carries and scored on runs of 10, 16 and 48 yards to lead the Braves over Chaminade, 42-7, before a crowd of about 7,000.

“That’s probably about as good as we’ve played this season,” Lompoc Coach Dick Barrett said. “Boy, when you score 42 points, especially against Chaminade.

“(Chaminade) is a good team. A hard-nosed team.”

Lompoc (12-0), seeded No. 1 in the division, will play Temple City, a 19-14 winner over West Torrance, next week at a site to be determined. Chaminade finishes 8-3.

Chaminade tailback Colin Havert, who entered the game with a team-leading 1,404 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns, gained 115 yards in 22 carries but was pounded. At one point in the fourth quarter after a vicious hit, Havert wobbled to the sideline and looked as if he was going to collapse.

“These guys hit a lot harder than Verbum Dei (the team the Eagles defeated last week),” Havert said.

As for Kaufman?

“He was all-around incredible. Amazed me,” Havert said. “We didn’t wrap up or anything so that made him a little better.”

Kaufman, a junior, broke three tackles en route to a 16-yard scoring romp to give Lompoc a 28-7 lead with 7:43 to play in the third quarter.

The next time he touched the ball, Kaufman again broke several tackles and ran 48 yards for the score.

“I was surprised,” said Kaufman, who has already set school records for touchdowns (33) and all-purpose yards (3,054). “We saw them on film and they looked like some big, tough dudes.”

Lompoc led, 21-7, at the intermission.

With Lompoc threatening, the ball squirted from Kaufman’s grasp at the Chaminade 35 with less than two minutes to play in the first half.

Chaminade’s Felix Goodson picked up the fumble and raced down the Lompoc sideline to the Braves’ 23, giving Chaminade its best field position of the first half.

Sparked by a nine-yard run by Havert and a 12-yard run by Aaron Weiss, the Eagles moved into scoring position. On third down from the one, Havert charged in for the score. Mike Terzian added the extra point to trim the deficit to 21-7.

The half was dominated otherwise by Lompoc, which gained 192 yards to Chaminade’s 96.

Kaufman, who led all rushers in the half with 84 yards in 11 carries, took a pitch and scored from the Chaminade 10 with 4:10 to play to give Lompoc a 21-0 advantage.

After Kaufman broke a 26-yard jaunt on Lompoc’s first possession, Chaminade’s defense tightened and the drive stalled at the Eagle 24. Tommy Thompson’s 41-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide.

Chaminade then softened and Lompoc’s offense got rolling. Quarterback Jason Garife, who scored on a one-yard bootleg in the second quarter, rolled out and found tight end Donnie Weigel wide open on a 32-yard scoring pass for Lompoc’s first touchdown.
