Brantley Lets Deeds Do Talking

Share

All it took was a verbal challenge.

Last week, Canoga Park High Coach Jeff Davis stated that he believes he has one of the best guard tandems in the Valley, second only to Cleveland’s.

Jermoine Brantley disagreed.

Brantley, a senior point guard at Granada Hills High, scored 20 points and had 15 rebounds in last Friday’s 100-73 victory over Canoga Park. His backcourt mate, Osiris Nalls, had 17 points.

“They’re supposed to have the second-best group in the Valley,” Brantley said before the Canoga Park game. “I’d like to thank them for the challenge.”

That performance capped a rock-solid week for Brantley. In Wednesday’s 81-72 win over San Fernando, the three-year letterman had 29 points and 10 assists. It was no anomaly, either: Brantley is averaging 20.3 points, 8.1 assists and 3.4 steals.

Streaks: Canyon’s 80-57 victory Friday over Ridgecrest Burroughs was the Cowboys’ first in the Burros’ gym since 1978. Burroughs, which lost to Saugus at home in triple overtime in 1987, has lost just two of its past 59 home games.

Records: Royal set a school record Friday with its 15th win of the season, an 85-63 victory over Channel Islands. The Highlanders (15-3) also set a school record with 29 assists.

Shooting: Royal’s Jared Byrne, a 6-foot-6 junior, is shooting 61.4% from the field and teammate Russell Myers, a 6-5 senior, is shooting 59.1%.. . . . In his past three games, Grant forward Setro Terzian has made 20 of 29 field-goal attempts. . . . Thousand Oaks converted only nine of 50 field-goal attempts in a 61-37 loss to Westlake on Friday. No Lancer had more than two field goals. Westlake, meanwhile, made 23 of 43 attempts.
