SPORTSCOPE : Aussie Lifeguards Win Trophy Back From Los Angeles

A group of lifeguards from Los Angeles County were narrowly defeated down under recently by counterparts from Victoria, Australia, as part of the biannual Wieland Shield trophy competition. The L.A. county group had held the trophy since 1988, when it defeated a group of Aussies at the International Surf Festival held along South Bay beaches. The event moves to California in 1992. The lifeguards are currently in New Zealand, where they will study lifesaving techniques in Auckland, as well as compete against a group of lifeguards their later this month.

A pair of seminars examining various aspects of athletics will be held this month in the South Bay. The College of Business Administration at Loyola Marymount will host “The Wide World of Sports Ethics” Feb. 12-15. The Young, Gifted and Black Residency and Honors Program at Cal State Dominguez Hills will take a look at “African-Americans: Sports, Education and the Human Spirit” Feb. 14-15. The Bay Harbor Minor Hockey Assn. sponsors a one-hour learn-to-skate program for prospective youth hockey players each Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Bay Harbor Olympic Ice Arena in Harbor City.
