Four Valley-area junior college women’s basketball teams have been selected for the Southern California Regional of the state tournament, and three are among the top nine seeded teams of the 16 entries.
Second-seeded Valley, fifth-seeded Canyons and ninth-seeded Moorpark will represent the Western State Conference as will fourth-seeded Santa Monica and 11th-seeded Ventura.
Foothill Conference co-champion Antelope Valley is the final local school in the tournament, which kicks off with eight first-round games Wednesday night.
Valley (27-5) finished second in the state last season and will play Pasadena (17-10) at 7:30 at Valley. Canyons (23-7) also has a first-round home game and will play Fullerton (16-13) at 7.
Canyons, making its first state playoff appearance, has beaten Fullerton by 30 points, but some Fullerton players were missing because of disciplinary action.
Moorpark (20-9), the three-time defending WSC Northern Division champion, travels to El Camino (21-7) for a 7:30 game. Antelope Valley (16-10) has won its last nine games but will have difficulty keeping the streak alive at top-seeded Golden West (31-1) at 7:30.
Winners play again Saturday with the victors advancing to the state tournament March 1-3 at College of the Sequoias in Visalia.
