HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : El Camino Real Clinches Share of 1st Title Since ’78

Sparked by a pair of key hits from light-hitting Greg Sheren, host El Camino Real High rallied to defeat Canoga Park, 2-1, on Tuesday and clinch at least a share of the West Valley League title.

El Camino Real, which leads second-place Chatsworth by three games in West Valley play with three remaining, last won a league title in 1978.

Sheren, who entered the game batting .194, singled with one out in the third and scored on a triple by pitcher Pat Treend. Sheren doubled in Sean Boldt with the winning run in the fifth.

Treend (9-0), a senior right-hander, threw a five-hitter, struck out nine and walked one for El Camino Real (15-2-1, 12-1-1 in league play).

In other games:

San Fernando 5, Granada Hills 1--Carlos Rodriguez slammed a three-run home run in the first inning to back the three-hit pitching of John Najar and lead San Fernando (15-4-2, 10-3-1) to a North Valley League win.

Chatsworth 12, Taft 0--Reed McMackin (8-2) tossed a five-hitter, struck out six and walked two in a West Valley League game at Taft. Nestor Martinez had his second consecutive three-hit game for Chatsworth (17-5-1, 9-4-1).

Kennedy 11, Cleveland 0--Senior left-hander Denny Sharp (6-4) threw a three-hitter, struck out 12 and walked four in a North Valley League game at Cleveland.

Jason Rosen, Lazaro Campos and Ben Guzman each had inside-the-park home runs for Kennedy (14-8, 9-5).

Hart 18, Schurr 4--Lance Migita was three for four with two home runs to lead Hart (19-1-2, 12-0) to its 16th consecutive victory in a Foothill League game at Schurr.

Crespi 11, St. Francis 7--Rick Marino was four for five with four RBIs to lead visiting Crespi (16-7-1, 8-2) to a Del Rey League win.

Saugus 14, Antelope Valley 6--J. B. Johnson hit his third home run in the past three games as Saugus (15-5-1, 11-1) clinched at least a tie for the Golden League championship.

Canyon 9, Quartz Hill 8--Steve Mann’s leadoff home run in the eighth inning capped a comeback for host Canyon (9-11, 5-7) in the Golden League game. Canyon rallied for four runs in the seventh to tie the score.

Monroe 18, Van Nuys 3--Scott Riding was three for five and scored four runs for Monroe (7-9, 5-8) in a Mid-Valley League game at Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Park.

Tony Gonzalez had a double and a triple for Van Nuys (4-10, 4-10).

St. John Bosco 5, Alemany 2--Manny Gebhart’s three-run, sixth-inning homer broke a 2-2 tie and lifted St. John Bosco to a Del Rey League win. Joey Rosselli struck out 12 for Alemany (12-12, 4-6).

Montclair Prep 22, L.A. Baptist 6--Kevin Grant (9-1) gave up two hits and struck out 11 to lead Montclair Prep (19-3, 7-1) in an Alpha League game at home.
