La Jolla Players Win in Girls’ 16s Tennis

Third-seeded Ditta Huber and seventh-seeded LeeAnn Rostovsky, both of La Jolla, recorded straight-set victories and were two of four San Diego area girls to win in Sunday’s opening round of the United States Tennis Assn. Girls’ 16s National Championships at Morley Field.

Huber, 14, defeated Lonna Logan of Stuart, Fla. 6-0, 6-4, and Rostovsky beat J.C. Biber of Spartanburg, S.C. 6-3, 6-3. Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport of Palos Verdes survived a first-set tiebreaker to defeat Preety Sorathia of Vorhees, N.J. 7-5, 6-4, while second-seeded Jill Craybas of Greenwich, R.I. defeated Lori Sowell of Miami, 6-1, 6-2.

Nikki Willette of San Diego beat Melissa Odom of Columbia, S.C. 6-1, 6-2, while San Diego’s Nicole Elliott was a 6-7, 6-0, 6-4 winner over Tricia Lehman of Malvern, Pa.

The second round begins at 11 a.m. today. The tournament concludes Saturday with the singles final at 11 a.m. and the doubles final at 1:30 p.m.

SOCCER

The San Diego Nomads edged the Los Angeles Heat, 1-0, on penalty kicks in a Western Soccer League game played in Los Angeles.

The Nomads remained in fourth place with an 8-11 record and 66 points, while third-place Los Angeles slipped to 9-9 with 70 points. The Nomads won 3-1 on kicks as goal keeper Anton Nistl made two saves.

The Heat plays its final two games on the road, while the Nomads are in a must-win situation entering their WSL regular-season finale against Santa Barbara, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at Southwestern College. Only the top three teams will advance to the WSL playoffs.

The Nomads are defending champions in the WSL.

BASEBALL

Escondido defeated Lakewood, 7-5, and advanced to the third round of the American Legion Baseball state tournament in Yountville, Calif. Escondido will play Fairfield at 9 a.m. today. The winner of that game will play Woodland Hills West at 3 p.m.

David Young singled in Todd Giardina with no one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Angels a 4-3 victory over the Astros in the first game of the San Diego Collegiate Baseball League championship playoffs.

The two teams will play again today, 7 p.m. at San Diego State’s Smith Field in game two of a best-of-three series. Joe Brownholtz, pitching in relief of Jim Thomas, got the victory for the Angels, regular season champions of the American Division. The National Division champion Astros got to Thomas for three runs in the first inning, then Thomas retired 20 of the last 22 batters he faced.
